Huge Decrease in Gaming Performance

Windows 7 is running fine, but all my games are slow, choppy, and have low FPS rates. AA is running at 4. My friend has the same laptop as me, and has also installed Win 7 RC, and he is getting 40-60 FPS in AA. We literally have identical systems. Is there anything I can check?

Do you both have identical graphics cards and cpus? Also what game is it that you are running? And are you both running identical screen resolutions?

Anti-aliasing does reduce FPS a tad, but if his screen resolution is less than yours he will gain in fps.

I'd say yes ;)

Check that you have the same sound/video drivers, same CCC settings, game settings, power plan settings etc.

Check your drivers... sound & video... uninstall and reinstall fresh drivers if necessary. Update Win 7 as well.

I also have noticed a Huge decrease in Gaming on my Alienware m15x laptop... I have checked all my drivers, and reinstalled them many times, Including reinstalling the OS, Every Game I have ran on W7 has had a much lower FPS including much Lower then when i was running Vista.... I wish I knew what the deal was

Malware, Spyware, Trojans and/or worms would do that to any OS... I have played the same game (Crysis as an example) in XP Pro w/SP3, Vista x64 Ultimate and now Win 7 and I am not looking back to any other the other 2 OSs... Win 7 beats them hands down.

Something went wrong when you were installing the OS, game or drivers... I can almost be 100% sure since there is no way that the blubber that is Vista can be faster than Win 7

If you don't have installed many things on your lappy or if you enjoy playing games on a daily basis, my tip of the day is... back up your data, nuke the drive and start all over again taking into account that everything you install must have Higher Admin Rights.

Every time I do a reinstall I completely wipe my hard drive and start fresh... Thats the only way to do it in my opinion... And i agree, there shouldnt be any way Vista should be faster, at all... But right now it is beating w7 on my machine, I have a feeling its a driver issue with something, But I am not sure what driver, I mean everything runs great, up until I want to play a game... then well, they play like crap...

I've noticed a slight decreas in performance in Prototype and in The witcher. Used to be able to max out gfx no worries on Vista 32-bit, but now it's slightly choppy. Not terrible but I want my performance back! :(

Running Sapphire 4870, Phenom 9550, ASUS M3A32-MVP Delux (not WiFi), 4gb of Kingston Hyper-x (nothing OC'd havn't needed to!). Usually my system never breaks a sweat, which is why I find it odd.

Using latest Catalyst drivers (9.8), would it be advisable to roll back a few versions? If so, what was a good win 7 x 64 version?

Having AA at 4 is one reason why it appears slow at a guess but since you did not provide your hardware details I cant be certain.

Just to add a few more questions to the mix, the hardware might be the same but what else is loaded on the laptop? What other processes are running, which antivirus are you running, firewall, and any other crap down in the system tray?

Just shifted to win 7
I too am facing the same problem on my desktop (everything else including aero is running fine)
xp for me was much faster in games.
win 7 - 4500 3dmark06
xp - 5200
in general i am getting 15-20 % slower performance.
got the latest nvidia 196.21 drivers, also updated windows and checked for spyware (found none).
can this be caused by any microsoft update

Update your hardware - a Pentium 4 is never going to cut it with 7, and install 4GB of RAM if your chipset can handle it and you have 7 x64.

Hey its not an issue with my processor my single core is inadequate by todays standards i agree but win 7 seems to work perfectly on it.
its only in games that i get bad performance, and i can't believe that any hardware would perform slower in 7 than in xp or vista

Yes, games need dual-core. If I remember, Mass Effect 2 pointed out that single cores are not supported.
