Just noticed this on my news feeds ,originally from blogs.msdn.com . Interesting reading.

Whats in store for the next Windows?

One of the great (or maybe not so great) things of being at Microsoft is that every other person wants to ask you why Windows works the way it does. Since I'm part of the Windows update team I get asked even more why does my machnie reboot everytime there is an update and why are there so many updates. So naturally once Windows 7 shipped, my friends, neighbours, relatives, and whoever else you can imagine started asking me So whats next?

Folks started asking me whats in Windows 8 - and the first thing I have to say is that I resonate Steven Sinofsky's interview on who said we're calling it Windows 8? I agree with Steven that till things are baked there is no point floating ideas since it leaves people frustrated when things don't turn out the way they expected. The Windows team promised to deliver a smarter, faster and more user friendly OS with Windows 7 and they delivered just that - the latest quaterly results of Microsoft are a clear indication that Windows 7 has been a success and customers got what Microsoft had promised them! The plan is to use a similar approach for the next version of Windows and till things are finalized you're not going to get a "marketing" name from us:)

So how am I referring to the next version of Windows without saying that many words - well simple - Windows.next:) This is definitely not the official version but a version that is becoming common along my circle. So what are our plans for this next version...

The minimum that folks can take for granted is that the next version will be something completly different from what folks usually expect of Windows - I am simply impressed with the process that Steven has setup to listen to our customers needs and wants and get a team together than can make it happen. To actually bring together dozens and dozens of teams across Microsoft to come up with a vision for Windows.next is a process that is surreal! The themes that have been floated truly reflect what people have been looking for years and it will change the way people think about PCs and the way they use them. It is the future of PCs...

Thats about it for this post for the time being - I know I'm not sharing much at this point but right now I can't as we work towards finalizing that vision. Feel free to post your comments on what you think Windows.net should be like!

He didn't spill any secrets.

Maybe they indeed felt that "windows.next" is a spiffy name.

So I am expecting these 5 things in Windows 8.

1. Faster boot. What I mean by that is when you see the desktop for the first time I would like it to be done loading. As in when you click on the internet you are not stuck waiting for other processes to be done loading before you can do what you want.

2. Improve security. It has to be more secure and a lot harder to get viruses etc on. 7 makes it way better then Xp but 8 needs to be even better.

3. Make fixing problems more idiot proof. Like somehow make it easier for dumb dumbs to figure out how to uninstall and just make the control panel way easier to use. This goes along with the entire OS. 7 refreshed the look but 8 needs to just make everything easier.

4. Make things just work. 7 again helps a lot but 8 needs to improve once again. Like when you install Windows 8 on a laptop it would be nice if everything just worked. If your trackpad, quick launch buttons like the increase sound/lcd screen that let you increase/decrease just by pushing a button. So everything on your laptop that is new within a few years should work great on Windows 8.

5. It should be rock solid stable. Things should not lock up and Internet Explorer has to be a useful. They need to improve on the basic programs they have and give some useful ones. They need a great photo/video editing software. Even better then what they have now.

That is 5 things I am really looking forward to!!!

1. W7 already boots fast, the time from the desktop to opening your browser, depends on how much is starting with your PC, you really can't make it any faster, if you only have 3 items at start, that's more then likely the fastest it will go.

2.How do you mean alot harder to get viruses? Alot of viruses that end up on a PC are from user activity, Torrents, Limewire etc. It's the users that need to be more aware of how to keep their PC clean from viruses, but we can't teach everyone now can we...

3. Haven't really got much to say on it, but i don't agree.

4. Everything just work? Do you know how impossible that is? Think of all the combinations of hardware there could be, Millions, Billions, and your asking M$ to make Windows Next, work with every single combination without any problems whatsoever. Too many combinations to make it a reality.

5. No OS is indestructible. And about the programs, the basic ones are provided already, and for the pic/vid editing, if the software is that good, what are the chances it will be free?

I didn't type all that to hack the crap out of you, so please, don't take it into offense, but what you've type there, i wouldn't expect it at all, not from M$ anyways.

I completely agree and don't really expect all of what I said to come true because I fully understand that is not going to happen.

However it would be nice to see all 5 of those to be put in some how with the new OS. Like number 4 they really should only support computer less then 3 years old for full coverage. And considering they only have to support the main pc makers, Dell, HP, Asus, Toshiba I don't really think it would be that hard since they make there own drivers anyways so they could put them on Windows update or something.

What I really am saying is that I want them just to improve upon 7 and make 8 just outstanding!!

I want everything in a bin on the desktop and its all a script Language (HTML5?) and customizable. pull out anything you want from the toolbox (bin) or hide everything. pin anything anywhere and make your own custom toolbars/stacks/icon sets/folder views/explorers/task runners/??? make several default setups for different types of people. 1 old-fashioned desktop. 1 for gaming systems. 1 for Home Theatre PC's. 1 for kids. 1 for etc. and you can make your own setup or download/upload customizations to an MS hosted site.

Build it and they will come.

Edit: and make it in 3d space and responsive to multi-touch screens....

If Microsoft started making thier own PC's, this could easily be accomplished, just like Apple. Even tho MicroSoft does some hardware peripherials, like mouses, and keyboards, and joysticks, they are primarily a software company.

If you want 4 and 5 to come true, tell Bill Gates you're willing to invest your own money to start an MSPC company.
