Is this the system protection service?
I don't know why but it annoys the hell out of me that I can't disable that service.
I think it makes me feel as though I am not in complete control of my own computer. Especially when it starts up and uses my, not microsofts, hardware to check my own software is activated.
My software is legitimate and activated, but every now and then just after booting a message will appear saying the software is not activated. The message will disappear in a second or two but whats that all about?

it should not, the keys are the same for upgrade and retail. the only difference is the dvd itself, so there should be no problem

i beleive it was Microsoft who made it public due to the buggyness of the upgrade route. plus %90 of people buying the disks already had an upgradeable version of windows (xp included) so either way it was not like they were loosing much in the long run.

How is when you buy a copy of windows at your local best buy, install it, a few weeks later install wga, have it tell you your copy isn't legal, and get on the phone for an hour with a holier-then-thou microsoft-can-do-no-wrong if-we-detected-you-as-illegal-then-you-are! b*tch! for over an hour...

That was the last time I install microsoft's anti-piracy technology!

To add, I did hear that they improved their customer support since back then...

New scanner found a trojan that MS essentials didn't find.
Scrapped Hard disk > new XP install, reactivation.

Still didn't get rid of it and eventually found where it was still hidden, new XP install, tried reactivation.
Demanded I ring MSOFT.

Get thru to MS call centre -
without any pleasantries, jumped-up call centre monkey demands that I tell him how many PC's I have downloaded XP onto!
(They can see straightaway from the activation codes, the motherboard and other parts MATCH ie the same PC)

Fekkin Fuming that something I purchased in 2001, COSTS me more fekkin money just to get working, then an employee/Rep of M-Soft accuses me of wrong doing.

He would have gotten an earfull with a bucket load of swearwords if I hadn't wanted the new serial activation No's quickly.

Well, in past experiences I've found that most activation/genuine checks that windows does tend to find a pirated version, but thats say 70% of the time, but other than that it scares the crap out of the potential user, making them actually avoid that software.

Imagine if basically all your software started checking if your Windows OS was genuine ?
Give the pirates something to think about huh..Still voluntarily right ?

I am smelling some / several bugs being involved with the new implementation if opted by user. I can see several (hot)fixes being issued by microsoft to fix problems that will arise from software conflicts on each individual system out there that opts in for "security" reasons just to verify to microsoft that they are running a legit copy on their personal machine. I can understand microsofts point of view wanting to fight piracy but to take it to the "home front" is in my eyes a little lame. I can see that they , the pirates will use them on their own personal machines but to single out every individual out there running microsoft in the battle. As I see it, the illegal copies are derived from legal copies, so it is in some way shape or form an internal leak from somewhere within distribution of the RTM copies that illegal copies are derived. So please microsoft take the battle elsewhere, we have enough updates for vulnerabilities, important updates, optional updates, software and hardware updates, fixes and hot fixes, hot fixes and fixes for the released hot fixes. Plus we get enough false positives with our anti-viruses that we choose to run as well.

Not always - though a proportion of illegal copies are from misappropriated legitimate keys a lot are made possible due to cracks and other types of reverse engineering.

This is, I believe the target of this update from Microsoft.

The thing is that if you have a stolen key then the actual copy of the software will show as legitimately activated until the actual key has been blacklisted.

I’d like to stress that the Update is voluntary, which means that you can choose not to install it when you see it appear on Windows Update.

I think its geared more to wards people that are wondering if they got what they paid for versus someone who is trying to cheat windows activation. Somebody that bought a PC with windows already installed can run it and find out if that version of windows was hacked and not legal. Making it optional and uninstallable is a good move on Microsoft's part. If you do think you got a false positive you just uninstall it and you are back in business. Back in business was probably a poor choice of words when talking about software piracy but you know what I mean.

Now that I think about it, just because you can uninstall the "detector" doesn't mean it undo's what it has done, right? i.e. watermarks and wallpaper

Yeah I know how old it is, but omegatron was talking about WGA, which was FUBAR for a lot of people. Wonder what's lurking in the shadows for legit users this time around. Maybe nothing, who knows.

MS did give the reason for this over on Mr./Mrs. Fried's blog:

Williams said Microsoft has put much of its focused on informing customers that may have been duped into buying a PC with non-genuine software.
"We are pretty realistic," Williams said. "People who are actively pirating will try to find ways to continue to pirate."

Would have been more accurate to say "will" instead of "will try", but I think they're taking the best approach.
