PM From A Forum Mod on game file forums

I received a notice of a PM on a forum which I barely remember having visted. It turned out to be a warning along with a threat.

Dear, seekermeister;sasibins;Diskhotroto;albandjanj;ViagraInUK!

A virus alert was noticed on your computer.
We highly recommend you to check your computer and perform online virus check at our site immediately: My computer Online Scan - Security Tool 2010
If you do not pass this test* we will have to delete your account and forward a complaint to your ISP with attached log file (your IP address, etc.).

I checked and the last time that I visited or posted was in February of 2008. If I was infected with a virus at that time, my AV never said anything about it, and for it to take two years for them to respond in this fashion...I do not believe. I responded with a request to cancel my account, followed with a threat of my own, if they would attempt to cause me any further trouble.

Had this come from some unknown source, I would just write it off as a hoax, but this caught me off guard. Does anyone have any insight to this?

I would personally suggest that the site should check it's security rather than you
it would appear that the site's members list, at the very least, has been compromised by a rogue AV.

Not every forum regards it's members as highly as Sevenforums

this one is doing the rounds on alot of forums just lately ,so beware and keep your AV's updated

it is an out and scam. unless you gave the forum express permission to scan your system they had no way of knowing if you did or did not have a virus at the time. more than likely the warning came from one of the regular forum users trying to get into peoples systems to get information. if you are a member of that forum still i would inform their admin of what you received.

I must assume that whoever did have the virus was using my login ID, but apparently he didn't post anything in my name...at least it doesn't appear under subscribed threads. I don't care about keeping that account, but if they do send a notice to my ISP as threatened, will that likely cause me any trouble?

seekermeister, its just a scam they have'nt got your login id just a members list you would not have been the only one look at the address "dear seekermeister............ViagraINUK

i seriously doubt they are going to send anything to your isp. as i said chances are a regular user at that forum ran across your email address and other forum members email addresses while searching the forum. the user was just too stupid to see that you had not been active in the forum for two years when they sent out his / hers spoof email(s). just go in and tell the admin what you received and ask them to close your account.

I would have thought that you are correct, but I have no idea of what is or isn't possible in this regard. But if they did have a valid means of checking, why would it take them two years to act on it?

In effect, I have already done that by replying to the PM...assuming that the reply actually goes to the admin, instead of someone else.

go to the actual forum itself. not to be harsh but you should have never responded directly to that email.

once in the forum upload them a copy of the email so they have the same info you do. if it is not them who sent the email they will more than likely want to nip this in the bud before it hurts their rep.

It wasn't the email that I responded to, it was the PM itself.

Id report that post quoting its contents to the forum administrator so the spammer can get banned.

In essence, that is what I did by replying to the PM, since it would also contain the message as a quote. The problem is that the PM should never have been sent in the first place.

Although what happen there could not happen here, I have just tightened security a little more just to make sure

Thanks for noticing that, I took it on face value. I attempted to locate a way to contact their admins, but if there is a way, I didn't find it.
