Don't understand this Administrator thing in Win 7

I've used Linux with it's username/password criteria for certain functions that require you be root, but don't understand why I'm getting "Must have Administrator privileges to complete this" message in Win 7. In Linux, it gives you the box for username/password for you to enter. Win 7 doesn't do this. How am I supposed to satisfy the requirement? Thanks.

Theog has given you a good lead. Remember the UAC is there for your protection, to make sure that you do not inadvertently do something that will cause problems later on. I feel that I can use my computer without the UAC, but keep them on, in the event that I am on the computer and I am precoccupied with life. Take care.

The user account control will only automatically prompt for elevation for programs that are written to be UAC aware. If the program does not prompt automatically then you can use the right click option - run as administrator

Are you talking about the UAC or something completely different?

If you right click and choose run as owner or admin you will get a password gui like linux. It is hard to tell though exactly what your trying to run. I at first turned off the UAC, as a experienced mostly open source user; running MS is easy in understanding the basic needed protections. I turned it back on and discovered the right click access from a limited account, and have left it on, I am used to the password prompts from running Linux. I know you can okay some programs to run as owner always there is a thread here somewhere.

What Windows 7 OS version are you running? Professional and above have a option in Local Security Policy that could be turned on, that no matter what account you are on, Admin or the User account (Limited account) it will prompt for a password before you can proceed.

If you are on a User Account (Limited Account) it will always ask you for a password when programs/settings require UAC. I am not aware if you can change/modify these settings in Local Security Policy. Of course you will have to have Professional and above in order to change settings in group policy..
