I asked this on the Vista Forums but asking over here too.

This will be for my Vista Ultimate x64 Machine (as of right now)

Question for all of you:

ATi Radeon X1900GT (512MB) or eVGA 9800GT (512MB) - Which is better?

I currently have the ATi card but found the 9800GT and a 9800GTX on ebay. Wanted to know if I would notice any graphic enhancements...

Currently I play Battlefield 2 but want to get into more games down the road after I upgrade some other parts of my system (Mobo & Ram).

Any help/advice is appreciated

Thanks

-Jeff

I'd do some research on the cards and their capabilities. FWIW, IIRC, ATI was making the 4830 to compete with the 9800GT....

You'll need to find a good review site and figure out the differences.

My personal opinion - nVidia FTW :P But I am biased, I know....

those cards are not even in the same league. the 9800GT would destroy any ATI card made before the 3000HD series.

Actually, your statement is completely incorrect. Generations of graphics card don't all supersede one another.

The X1900 series will beat the HD2k, some of the 3k and even 4k series in benchmarks.

According to http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=234381

"X1950 is more in the league of HD 3670 or something, within that price range the bare minimum you should be looking for is the HD 3870/4670 series and the 4870 is double the performance of the 3870/4670"

wow, my first post and some know it all who knows nothing is already picking an etard battle with me. awesome.

TechOutsider, you have no clue what you're talking about.

the x1900GT is comparable to a nvidia 7900GT. as seen here:
PowerColor X1900 GT: Worthy Rival to GeForce 7900 GT? (page 19) - X-bit labs

not even close to running with current 2 gens of gfx cards from either manufacturer.

Your statement repectfully, is generalistic and for the most part baseless.

Right, Chappy - I was just saying that the comparison of the 1900 and the 9800 is not a truly fair comparison....

Not to flame, however let's put it this way. You are trying to say each successive generation of graphics card is better than the last generation. That is what I thought as well. Only problem is when I look at x1950 prices, it was about 200 to 300. I thought, "no way!" It's a last-gen card! My HD2400 should beat it's .... in benchmarks (it's the next generation, iteration, and therefore an improvement and refinement).

Sadly, no. Product ranges overlap each other. I inquired at the Wilder Security Forums and the answer I posted above is based off another person's answer.

Just look at the HD2400 and x1950. No comparison, price-wise. Google Shopping lists the HD2400 at around 50 to 100 bucks.

----

Back to the original question. x1900GT and a 9800GT.

Well, I would go with the 9800 GT; it uses DX10 and SM4.0. The x1900GT on the other hand draws in DX9 and SM3.0. It's always nice to future proof yourself. As my original post stated, the x1950, an upgraded x1900, is ~HD3760. The 3 series was made to compete with the 9 series. So let's work backwards. We can easily match the 3870x2 with the 9800GX2. The 3870 with the 9800GT.

Thus, x1900GT > 9800 GT

Correct - even when the 9000 series of nVidias were out, the 8800GTX was still the monster card to have - for the most part.

Now, I'll bet even money that hte 4870 will blow the pants off that x1900, jsut as I know my GTX260 will outperform most 9800 series cards as well.

i've never seen a flagship card from a previous generation beat a current gen flagship card.

i've never seen a flagship card from a previous generation beat a current mid/high end card.

X1900GT vs HD 2400 is comparing a high end card from a previous generation to the lowest end value card of the current gen. and still, i would take the HD 2400 over the X1900GT any day. it has lower power consumption and has significant architectural advancements. it may not beat the X1900GT in straight frame rate, but frame rate isn't everything.

now, in the case of a X1900GT vs 9800GT, it's no comparison. you can't compare them on any level whatsoever. the X1900GT literally has ancient technology compared to the nvidia 9000 / ati 4000 series.

however, let me throw this into the mix... i'm not sure how much you can get the 9800GT for, but retail they are about $130, for about $10 more you can find an ATI 4850HD, which is a better card and should have a longer lifespan than the 9800GT in terms of compatible games.

If frame rate isn't everything, then what is? I know in terms of power consumption next generation cards generally win; attribute it to die shrinks. I would personally take the x1900GT; it gets a 5.8 in 7 compared to the HD 2400's 4.1.

As for an x1900GT and a 9800GT, the x1900GT will fall behind the 9800GT. Not by a long shot, however it will perform moderately worse than the 9800GT.

why throw out such misinformation? not by a long shot? the 9800GT scores over 15,000 in 3DMark06 where the X1900GT scores just over 4,000. when you consider a 100 point gain in 3DMark06 is a significant improvement; how is over 10,000 point difference only performing moderately worse?

it's like saying a kia is only moderately slower than a ferrari.
