XFX GTS250 - PSU Questions

Well, since i bought my GTS 250 i'm having some issues, this is the thing, the XFX GPU box says that the Reccomended PSU is one of 620w NON-SLI and 670w SLI with a 24amp 12v rail.

My current GPU is a 500w with a 18amp 12v rail, im planning to buy a new PSU, the but the problem is that MOST of Hi-End (PowerCooler, Coolermaster, Thermalthake) 600w doesn't haves 24amps... and are WAY to expensive, and i've saw some... cheap 700w PSU with 26amp with 2 12v rails.

And when a PSU haves as an example, 2 rails of 15amp or that kind of thing, that ammount of ampers are doubled because the 2 rails? or some PSU haves 3 rails, in this case 15x3? of im wrong...

If someone knows a GOOD psu for my GTS250 would be awesome.

Total watts and therefor amps is fixed. the total amps are spread over the number of rails. IE on a 48 amp total system they might be 24, 12, 12. Not 48 times three.

As for a recommendation, how much are you looking to spend? One thing to remember is that a good quality 500-600W (and in some cases 400-450W) power supply will be far better than some cheap-as-chips no-name power supply.

500-600watt name brand PSU is all you need for that system.

I just ordered a evga GTS 250 1 GB and the recomended PSU for it is 450 watts. Since the GTS 250 only uses one six pin power connector this sounds about right. You should call XFX and verify the power requirements befor making an additional purchase.

Corsair HX 650 in addition to the other suggestions is a fine PSU. Oh, and never buy Coolermaster - best PSU's in random order are from Corsair, Antec, Seasonic, Enermax and Xigmatek (my first PSU).

+1. I would also add to that list PC Power and Cooling. My custom boxes all run a combination of Antec or Corsair.

Thanks - hard to get PC Power and Cooling over here. Honestly, the PSU is the most important part of a PC, and no one seems to care enough about it.

I hear you. I think for many typical home users, they don't give a darn with their prebuilt computers...they don't even know what they have. For others trying to assemble dirt cheap PC's...they often have lots of problems that are quite possibility all caused by power issues.

However, around this board...most people take their power supplies pretty seriously. In fact, in many cases, many people often go considerably over the power levels they need. I've seen boxes running Corsair 1000's that could easily have run on the Corsair 520 based on their specs. I toiled on my build between the Corsair HX520 and the HX620. In the end, I went with the 620..as I figured that I would probably upgrade to a different video card down the road. But I'm not even at 50% capacity of my current PSU. While I was building though, many suggested that I get a 700-800 just to be safe

I went for a 650w for my 4890, and it will handle a 5870. Not sure about the case though. Upgraded a nasty factory PSU to an Antec TP 550 New seeing as I have a PC for gaming and this is enough for work. That being said, you never see the type of PSU in specs sheets. The POWER_GOOD signal can also be truncated by cheaper models.

I've considered upgrading my 9800GTX+ for a Radeon 5850....but I've had so little time for gaming...that I think it would end up just being a waste of money. Plus, as a Linux user..i have a very hard time accepting an ATI video card as Linux support has been notoriously better over the years with Nvidia. But I don't think that Nvidia has anything that touches a 5850 for $280-$315. Oh well, the longer I wait to decide, the better the technology becomes for a lower price.

Good choice, but I've found it easier to have a separate gaming system apart from the rest of my PC's/laptops. Less issues with compatibility. The system has nothing on it, no PDF reader only drivers, benchmarks, updates, and copy protection technologies. If I were upgrading I'd go for a 5870.

5870 is a very large card...plus quite overkill for my gaming really. I mean honestly i've been totally pleased with my 9800GTX+, the upgrade to the 5850 would be just to be more modern with my GPU and better support the 1920x1080 that I run to my monitor. I don't game enough to justify a dedicated system for it. I bet I average less than 4 hours a month gaming at the present time between my PC and my Xbox360.
