Still no hack to uninstall Defender?

Yeah, I know. It's "integrated into the system" and "turning it off is good enough." Maybe for some. Why should I take up my hard disk space, storing crappy Windows programs just because MS wants to foist their trash on people? What are they going to "integrate" next that we can't get rid of, and how much space will it take up? This is a non-consumer-friendly road to head down.

I find it hard to believe Defender is "integrated" into the system in a way that makes it impossible to uninstall. It is a module and as such must have key components that can be removed. And when the services are disabled, there should be no calls to it.

Anyone know of a way to uninstall it yet?

Best would be you write your own OS. Sounds like you would not be happy with any other solution. It can be done. I have done it - in 1965.

Yes I would love to uninstall it myself but it really doesn't take up that much hd space. I am just happy I can disable it.

And if the programs I require came in a Linux flavor, I would gladly do that. But since I do more than twiddle my thumbs on the computer -- unlike some -- I don't have a choice in the OS I use.

Yes, you can use (1) A/V and (1) A/S together, (and since AVAST is an A/V, it works fine with Defender, an A/S). But Defender is only a decent A/S, not an exceptional or even a particularly good one. If you disable it, you can use a better program.

However, in typical, anti-consumer MS fashion, they don't even make it easy or obvious how to disable Defender. (Not that you can't find directions quickly by Googling it.) And it should also be listed in the Add/Remove programs, so that it can be uninstalled. Instead, they made this sub-par program a permanent part of the OS, whether you like it or not, even though third party programs do a better job of protecting your computer against spyware. Because again, MS likes to force their inferior programs on consumers. It's a shame they don't just stick to OSs... if they did, maybe they wouldn't have had the VISTA fiasco.

MSE turns it off anyway. Unless you have a 20gb HD you already have enough space.

Disable if using alternate A/V, it only takes about 20mb and don't update it.

LOL... Yeah. That'll be next. They'll incorporate sub-par programs and remove all ability to disable them! This is what we've come to... being grateful MS still allows us to disable this crap!!

Well, when you buy Windows and agree to use it, you are stuck I'm afraid with quite a number of limitations and things which are set it stone. You are free to go elsewhere if you dislike it this much. Is space really an issue these days???I mean a 1TB drive costs less than the license for Windows.

It's very insulting for you to say that those of us who can happy use Linux (or alternatives to Windows) simply are twiddling our thumbs and not using our computers. How many years of experience using Linux do you have? It must be a fair amount if you know that there are absolutely no alternatives to your particular needs.

Let's see, Windows 95/98/2000 and XP....terribly insecure operating systems. Changes to Vista and Windows 7 to improve upon security...but let's make using this optional......I don't think so. Microsoft has a business reason to strive towards making a safer and more secure operating system. Because if they simply turn their heads long enough, somebody will step in and provide 1 and then MS is going to be replaced in the marketplace. Clearly, as an extremely competitive business they cannot do this.

I see in your profile that you are using Windows 7 Ultimate edition too. Seems pretty odd that you would buy the most expensive version of Windows with all of these extra pointless crappy features that you have absolutely no need for.

I couldn't possibly know what your needs are...it just seemed to me that you aren't all that happy with MS. I wouldn't expect you to buy anything more than you absolutely needed, but rather use better alternatives for other functionality.

I kinda see where he is coming from but I don't see where all the animosity is coming from because of only 20MB of HD space. I am not showing loyalty to Microsoft in any way shape or form. I think all of the prominent OS's out there have their +'s and -'s. I use them all and enjoy digging and finding what I like and dislike about each one.

One being the Windows Defender issue but man that's a really small dislike to get so worked up about. You could be limited to spending $1000+ for a neutered version of BSD or an OS that just doesn't seem to work always unless you know your way around the terminal.

I guess what I am trying to say is that there are always gonna be dislikes in every OS. There is no such thing as a perfect OS.

MS programs for AV and AS are substandard. Third party programs rate higher in the vast majority of independent tests. And what you quoted over and over, was the same gripe about just this point. Defender should have been uninstallable, but MS wants to force the public to use it. It's an anti-consumer, pro-MS principle MS works off of... but that's nothing new. They've always tried to push inferior programs on people over better third party alternatives.

That's why I say, they should stick to OSs.

The only way that I would see this as a problem would be if they somehow prevented the 3rd party applications from being usable.

For those people who aren't savvy enough to get a better tool, the use of the built-in tool is a far better than simply going without. I just don't think that Microsoft could sit around and continue to publish operating systems that were simply wide open to attack. Leaving the less savvy wide open would be an injustice to all of us. But on the flip side, if they manage to put out a fantastic application that takes the world by storm..all of the 3rd party mfg's claim monopoly and bundling. So, MS tends to lose out both ways.

That's why I say, they should stick to OSs.

My request would be to sit down and retool the entire security aspect of the system overall. Implement changes to more or less eliminate the need for all of these 3rd party tools...prevent the machines from being infected in the first place. That would be a really great step in the right direction.
