A necessary condition of a statement must be satisfied for the statement to be true. Formally, a statement P is a necessary condition of a statement Q if Q implies P. For example, the ability to breathe is necessary to a human's survival. Likewise, for the whole numbers greater than two, being odd is necessary to being prime, since two is the only whole number that is both even and prime.
A sufficient condition is one that, if satisfied, assures the statement's truth. Formally, a statement P is a sufficient condition of a statement Q if P implies Q. Thus, jumping is sufficient to leave the ground, since an intrinsic element of the concept jumping is leaving the ground. A number's being divisible by 4 is sufficient (but not necessary) for its being even.

The whole concept of necessary and sufficient conditions has always fascinated me.
As in the example above. Breathing is a necessary condition for you to carry on living but it's not a sufficient condition. Pretty hard to get your head round

I like mine from the "Windows 7 SP1 Leak Tomorrow" thread

You go into a a store, and buys the most delicious cake, and the next day you go back to buy more of them in the same. But the store is closing up and closing down due to not being able to pay their electric bill. You ran around the city, confused, looking for a cake like it, but you can't find any. You get stressed and finally looks across the street, and there it is. The cake you have been looking for. You run for it, jumping to reach it, but you fall to the ground, as your shoe lace gets stuck in a piece of gum. You try to get out, then you see it, a russian bloke buys the cake and leaves the store. Now you cannot get the cake anymore.
You are now so stressed you agreesivly runs toward the russian and rips the cake out of his arms and runs off. When you get it home, it was worth it all.

Telescopes are in some ways like time machines. They reveal galaxies so far away that their light has taken billions of years to reach us. We in astronomy have an advantage in studying the universe, in that we can actually see the past.
We owe our existence to stars, because they make the atoms of which we are formed. So if you are romantic you can say we are literally starstuff. If you're less romantic you can say we're the nuclear waste from the fuel that makes stars shine.
We've made so many advances in our understanding. A few centuries ago, the pioneer navigators learnt the size and shape of our Earth, and the layout of the continents. We are now just learning the dimensions and ingredients of our entire cosmoc, and can at last make some sense of our cosmic habitat.
