[need driver] Canon CanoScan N1220U

New member
I have a Canon Scanner "CanoScan N1220U" that I used on XP.

Looking to get it to work for W7 46-bit.

I tried the XP driver, and it says it successfully installed but, but then a pop up comes up and says:

LaunchAnywhere GUI has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
Windows will close the program and notify if a solution is available.

ok I got the driver to install and now the computer knows it is there.

But now Photoshop (CS4 64-bit) does not list the scanner when I go to file import
(like it did when I had XP and Photoshop 7)

I tried using the install disc that came with the computer, but it says it is not compatible with my OS.

I did install VueScan 8.5.37, but I have to scan in the program, save it, then open the file in photoshop. I'd rather just scan right inside photoshop.

well it looks like that driver works.l If I go into device manager, the scanner is listed with out a "!" next to it. And there is a drive name listed on the driver tab.

But I would like to make the scanner show up on the imports of photoshop.

Maybe I should ask this in the programs section since it is now more of a photoshop/scanner problem than driver problem??

ok I'm totally confused....

When I go to the device manager, my scanner is listed under Imagaing Devices. When I look at the properties, and drivers tab, there is a driver listed (says: Hamrick Software, which is the maker of VueScan)

I just downloaded Picasa, to try that built in scanner tool.
If I click the import button, the scanner is not listed.

I tried using Miscrosoft Fax and Scan program.
When I click on new scan, it says "scanner not detected"

But...

I downloaded the trail version of VueScan, and that did see the scanner. I scanned a picture, but since it is a trial version, it put a water mark on the picture. So that program will not work for me.

I have the same problem and I am  why Canon won't support the N1220U scanner for Win7. Not many users want to throw away perfectly working hardware due to lack of drivers :sarc:

Workaround = Vuescan
Vuescan installs a "dummy" scanner driver for Windows 7. This means that the scanner will NOT work with most programs' built in scanner functionality (eg photoshop), ie there is no twain support.

The scanner will only work with vuescan. You can perform all your scanning, save the scanned file(s) and then open the scanned file in your preferred program (ie photoshop).

Apparently Canon didn't support the above scanner in Vista and based on that, they won't support it in Win7. I have emailed their support explaining that Vista was never a mainstream OS (many users still preferred XP) and Windows 7 probably will be the next mainstream OS.

If more users email Canon's tech support and ask for drivers, maybe they will reconsider and sit their lazy asses down to write some Win 7 code

The scanner as a separate piece of hardware is long obsolete and there is no incentive to write drivers for it...

It depends on how you define obsolete...
If I buy a new scanner, what more will it do other than *have* Win7 drivers? The N1220U is slim, it works via USB which also provides power (no separate power adaptor needed) and most importantly it still works!!! :)

Other hardware vendors have opted to support their old hardware. I have a MS trackball from 2001 that has full Win7 x32 and x64 drivers. Creative has opted to do the same with their older soundcards...

Oh and the incentive for any vendor would be customer loyalty and satisfaction IMHO.

In an ideal setting I would agree 100% with you, however from a real world setting, there is no economic justification to continue support for a $50.00 scanner ... sux, but true.... The solution is do not support companies that wont support their older hardware...

I found Windows 7 drivers that work with the Canoscan N1220U. I've just verified this on my Windows 7 PC.

http://software.canon-europe.com/files/soft6284/software/S14l_en.exeI've uploaded them to my personal web site at http://www.miloonline.net/stash/CanoScanCSUv571a.zip.

To get them working, simply:

  1. Connect your scanner to your PC. Windows 7 will try to find drivers, and fail.
  2. Right-click Start -> Computer and select "Manage." In the left-hand pane of the Computer Management window, click "Device Manager."
  3. Find your scanner (probably underneath "Other Devices") and right-click it, and select "Update Driver Software..."
  4. Select "Browse my computer for driver software," then enter the folder where you unzipped the CanoScanCSUv571a.zip file. The drivers should install OK.

Did not work

Hello,

I tried exactly as you mentioned above but whenever I select the unzipped folder in step 4, I always get back an error "Windows was unable install your Canoscan. Windows could not find driver software for your device. If you know the manufacturer of your device, you can visit its website and check the support section for driver software."

I have tried above on both Windows Vista and Windows 7. BTW, both these OS'es are bit.

What am I doing wrong?

Yeah it would help to know if MiloDC's fix works under both 32 and 64-bit OS's

BTW you said...

BTW, both these OS'es are bit.

32 or 64-bit.

Also, While I can't help you find the drivers for you Canoscan, I can offer you an alternative....

You could try Vuescan from Hamrick if you don't find a suitable solution. The software allows you to use your scanner on a 64-bit OS through its program by providing its own 64-bit driver. It usually offers more options and tweaks over the standard software issued with the scanner. The downfall is it will set you back $40.00 for the Standard edition or $80.00 for the Pro edition. There is a 30-day trial version as well.

And for what it's worth, some of us Nikon users were in the same boat until someone found a solution for us which I compiled here - Getting your Nikon Coolscan to work on W7 x64. I know this doesn't help your situation, but maybe you could search the web like I did to see if someone has an equivalent fix.

Good luck, and give Vuescan a try if you can't find a suitable solution.

Read this if you have the newest version of Photoshop - Adobe Photoshop CS5 - and have problems with the import function. To import the scanner, copy the plug-in in to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\Plug-ins\Import-Export

Download the plug-in file here:
