Windows 7 - upgrade or not upgrade?

Hello everyone

I'm considering whether to upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7. IMHO, the new OS seems to be not sufficiently "mature" yet, and it is better to wait for the first service pack to come out before actually upgrading.

What do you think? Should I upgrade nevertheless?

Thanks in advance

Hi rfe777 and welcome to sevenforums,

i think you will find that a lot of folks here will say that windows 7 has been stable and a good performer for months, even for a long time before official retail release.

there is talk of a upcoming service pack, but it doesn't look as if there will be anything much in it, just a collection of already released updates. nothing like vista...

sure some people have had trouble will their particular hardware and windows 7, and some folks haven't found it easy adjusting to the differences between the two systems, but i think it's safe to say that most users have made the switch and shudder at the thought of going back to xp.

of course, your mileage may vary :)

mickey says upgrade!

Another vote to dump XP and go with Seven. I am another of those who chose to bypass Vista and wait for Seven.

You should not be worried.

Seven works very well. You will be very impressed with what it can do. You don't have to deal with XP's crap anymore. Sure it is stable but it is so out of date and in my opinion becoming very insecure. Also 7 is fast. Even I installed it on a netbook and I just think it runs smoother then XP in just about every way.

I just can't recommend XP anymore to anyone. No real reason to use it anymore unless you have a program you have to use that you know will not work on 7.

XP is unusable compared to Windows 7. Everything is smoother and fun to use on Windows 7.

Windows 7, aside maybe from some UI elements, is nothing like Vista, so don't be put down if and when people tell you it's like "Vista 2.0". Windows 7 is more like "XP 2.0", with Vista as the horrible beta :P.

I just can't recommend XP anymore to anyone. No real reason to use it anymore unless you have a program you have to use that you know will not work on 7.

Well, if he goes to Professional or Ultimate, he can run XP mode and have an XP virtual machine set up. Hell, he can use his own XP copy to make a virtual machine if he wants, and he can be on Home Premium. If you're building your own rig, I would really recommend Professional at the least.

Now with "XP Mode" that's not even an issue anymore.

What?

Vista is more stable than XP, as it uses the same technology 7 is using for that.

I guess it also could depend on your hardware.

Windows xp pro was all i knew when i first dabbled into the world of pc's,since then ive tried a few linux distros, more than capable of fixing some problems, learning all the time and when i leaped to windows 7 man it had me hooked, and i still am,i love windows 7 and look forward to working with it over the next couple year.

My friends on xp pro and had to fix a problem today for her and ive gotta say the look and feel of xp is soooooo outdated and quite badly built, although we all managed to work with it at the time. But now i leapt to winows 7 it just has me hooked, fell in love with it and totally addicted to it and a huge improvement over xp, oh by the way i too skipped vista, didnt like that bloat os from day1:)

Just by looking at number of threads mentioning about crashes and various other unsolvable problems, you should be in better position to decide.

Hello understack, welcome to Seven Forums!

If you were to really to study most of those threads you mention "about crashes and various other unsolvable problems" you'd see most of it is user inflicted and could have / should have been avoided in the first place.

In addition to what Bare Foot Kid mentioned, many problems are also caused by bad hardware.

hi Bare Foot Kid.

"you'd see most of it is user inflicted and could have / should have been avoided in the first place." - May be you are right.

Please allow me to explain my case. Few days ago I bought Windows 7 Ultimate for my Lenovo Laptop. Since then I've spent full 3 days to make it work. hundreds of crashes and driver issues, probably not my fault. Most of them I fixed with the help of this forum but this one is still making me go crazy.
