Well can you at least describe what happened before this all came wrong??? Of course there is a reason why this happened. Please recall the things you did before WMP started going bad. Try a virus scan.

I suspect this could be a registry error. Have you used any registry cleaners??? Or if you haven't, try CCleaner, maybe it will fix some problems that are making you media players malfunction.

Why don't you want a system restore??? Because it will ruin your newly installed programs???? Its the most effective solution I can think of without reinstalling the OS. It can also restore the registry so if something has been lost there unintentionally, system restore can bring them back.

Try using Revo Uninstaller to uninstall it. It'll find any and all leftover registry entries and files and delete them.

Media Player Classic Home Cinema is by far the best video player available for download. Windows Media Player 12 is garbage, it is only good for playing music. For video files regardless of what format they are whether it be an AVI or a 1080p MKV...media player classic home cinema is the player for you. With MPC-HC you are able to have all videos start full screen without having to double click the god damn video player soon as you double click the file to open it it will play in full screen...there is also another setting which stretches the video and changes the aspect ratio to which one ur display is to remove the annoying black bars (downloaded videos)... on any display...whether it be a 16:10 laptop screen, a 16:9 flatscreen tv..a 5:4 old pc monitor...it will play without black bars...it also has a pan and scan feature (shortcut: press "8" on your keyboard (numberpad) until the hard coded bars disappear (like actual retail dvd's and blu-ray movies with aspect ratios of 2.35 or 2.40...MPC-HC is by far the best video player out there...you just gotta get used to it! but i use it everyday for my downloaded tv seasons (xvid/x264 720p) and movies (x264 1080p)...
