Solved Any way to hide memory in Win7?

I have an old 32-bit app that checks to make sure the PC has enough memory before it runs. Evidently it was programmed to expect the maximum possible would be 2GB or something, because on my new 8GB, 64-bit PC, it won't run. It reports -128MB of memory and shuts down.

Is there any way to limit the amount of memory Win7 sees, so that when this app checks for memory, it reports 2GB instead of 8GB? I only run this app occasionally, and I don't mind rebooting to run it, but I don't want to have to actually remove the memory sticks.

Go into msconfig (type msconfig in search) go to boot>advanced and set max memory to 2048. make sure you unchcek it after. See picture

Alternatively you might get lucky if you start the app in Windows XP compatibility mode. Or heck, I think you can even make a shortcut to the app and in the properties of the shortcut define max memory (or was that Windows 95? ;P )

Does that reduce the memory to 2Gb for everything? If so, that doesn't seem like a good thing to do. What happens to the other 6GB?

The other 6GB memory is just there for decoration and can't be used.

The original poster intended to use this only as a workaround though, he won't keep his machine like that - it's just to set every now and then when he wants to run that particular 32 bit application.

Correct. But I misunderstood your first reply, when you suggested XP compatibility mode. I thought you meant the VM thing in Win7, but googling around I saw that you can set an app to run in several different modes by right clicking on the exe file, and selecting Properties/Compatibility. Setting it to XPSP2 made it work, even with 8GB memory. Thanks to both of you.
