Why does www.avast.eu take me to the Avira website?

I found this interesting...

In this someone (or another company) uses the Avast name to sell their own products—real or fake. For example, a European might decide to download our product by going to www.avast.eu (.eu stands for the European Union). But if they do so, they will find themselves on the website for Avira—a completely different antivirus company. Of course there is nothing on the Avira website indicating to the user that they have been misled. While this is behavior one would expect from dodgy or fraudulent websites, Avira is actually a legitimate company and makes a very good antivirus product. Since Avira’s CEO and Attorney have ignored countless emails and phone calls, your guess is as good as mine as to why Avira is doing this. Maybe they are trying to irritate us. Maybe they believe the name is theirs. Or maybe they have found it profitable to mislead unsuspecting internet users.

I would imagine that Avira would be happy to sell the .eu domain name to Avast for a _reasonable_sum.;)

On a more serious note as Avast is the trading name of Alwil Software, the presence of the site may result in some interesting publicity for both companies and the issuing authority.

I have a ticket in with Avast support asking for their explanation ;) [Lights blue paper and runs away].

If I get any interesting replies will keep everyone informed :D

History notes. Some may notice that we do use the domain www.antivir.cz here in the Czech Republic when Antivir is also the name of one of Avira’s products. “Antivir” is simply the Czech equivalent of “antivirus”. Similarly, www.antivirus.com is owned by Trend Micro. We registered the names www.antivir.com and www.antivir.cz in 1997 and for many years used these domain names. A couple of years ago Avira wanted the name www.antivir.com and we struck an agreement to transfer that name to them. However, we kept the www.antivir.cz as it is merely the Czech equivalent of www.antivirus.cz.

HA! :p

This is an "unoffcial" answer from Avira, maybe?
Vincent, it is a pity that you (i.e. Avast) never bothered to start a domain transfer for avast.eu for more than three years now. Like we did with avast.info in the past, you remember? And I have stated numerous times that I am willing to transfer that domain to Avast. But it should be you initiating that transfer, that is how a secure domain transfer between two entities work.
And thank you for the chance to get things straight: I´ve redirected avast.eu to avast.com in 2007 for two years or so, when the Avast guys wanted that domain. Me, as the domain owner, I´ve never received a transfer request for that domain and told you so a couple of times. Given all the protection I was giving to your domain name – and paying for the domain name – I felt that you guys are not interested in that domain which was mid 2009. So I put it back to point to us.
Without a transfer request made by your registrar to my registrar nothing will happen. This is how a secure domain transfer works between two entities. It is not about being willing to release that domain, it is less understanding how internet and domain registration in general works. However, the domain avast.eu was already deleted by me a couple of weeks ago, so it will free to be taken by anyone as soon as its released by the registry. Pity. Case closed.
