Sony VAIO CS17G - Drivers Assistance

New member
Hi,

I have this Sony VAIO CS17G notebook with Vista Home Premium & plan to install Windows 7 Professional. Looking around have found that Windows 7 upgrade has caused issues with the Volume Keys Touch Panel & the Web Cam.

Have downloaded the drivers provided by Sony from here, but drivers for the above two are not present. Also, on reviewing have found out that though these people have instructed for re-installing graphics driver but have not actually provided it.

Graphic Card Make/ Model: NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS (128MB)
Current Installed Driver Version: 7.15.11.7580

Web Cam: Sony Visual Communication Camera
Current Installed Driver: Driver Provider-Microsoft | Driver Version: 6.0.6001.18000

Pls assist with the same.

Hi, no matter what, you should always use the Windows 7 upgrade advisor to advise you on what action you should take with each individual driver/ program.

Your graphics card drive can be downloaded from NVIDIA DRIVERS 197.16 WHQL (oddly enough it says it was released today, so its brand spanking new)

There is a thread here about your Web Cam, try having a look and seeing if it helps. http://www.sevenforums.com/drivers/40727-sony-visual-communication-camera-vgp-vcc2.html

I hope this is of use.

Thanks osholt for your reply & the links. Had looked around the board but did'nt find similar laptop model.

Is the NVIDIA link suitable for my model, as it also says;
However, please note that your notebook original equipment manufacturer (OEM) provides certified drivers for your specific notebook on their website.
The thread referred by you for web cam seems to be providing the drivers for;

Also, do I need to take of anything else before I go in for the clean install of Window 7 Pro.

If you are doing a clean install, you MUST backup everything otherwise it will be lost.

Please make sure you have all the required serial numbers and software disks for the software you have purchased as well as your driver disks.

To check compatibility with applications etc. I would point you back to the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor; this will tell you what action is required for drivers and applications to work with Windows 7. Most of the time you won't have to do anything.

Other than all your software and drivers, either in a backup or on their original disks, you will not need to do much else on your Windows Vista installation.

Hi Parry,

As Oli pointed out, it is best to run the Upgrade Advisor before moving from Vista to Windows 7. I wanted to point out the Windows 7 Compatibility Center as well. For questions on if any of your software or hardware will work with Window 7, you can find out by checking the Compatibility Center: Windows 7 Compatibility: Software Programs and Hardware Devices: Find Updates, Drivers, and Downloads.

As for updated drivers, if you cannot locate Windows 7 drivers, be sure to try the Vista drivers as many times they will do the trick :)

Here is a tutorial you can print out to help guide you through the upgrade process: Upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7 - Help & How-to - Microsoft Windows.

Hope you enjoy Windows 7!
Cheers,
Cassandra

Will run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor & Compatibility Center and revert.

Ran Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor, the report is attached for reference.

Spoke to Sony Support they have provided this driver for NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS. Also, inquired about the Volume Keys Touch Panel & Webcam. They said there's no separate driver for them, they should work by installing these utlities;

Sony Shared Library
Setting Utility Series
VAIO Event Services

Further, they also informed that it might be possible that the FN Keys might not work. :eek: Any Help?

Secondly, I found this on their support page - Windows 7 Intel SATA Driver Registry Patch Update; will this be also required?

Some people get them working, some don't, and it seems a bit of a science with some models to get them working, and those utilities need to be installed in a certain order, which can differ from model to model.

Just been to the support page and found this link - Windows 7 Individual Drivers and Utilities : Sony Asia Pacific
which when you click Proceed, takes you to an install guide with a list and links to Windows 7 drivers.

Yup, have downloaded all the relevant drivers from there only.
For Volume & FN Keys; Sony Support is suggesting to install those utilities (given on 17, 19 & 21) in this sequence:

Sony Shared Library
Setting Utility Series
VAIO Event Services

Still can't figure out anything for the web cam. :huh:
What do you suggest should I stop my looking around for drivers prior to the installation & take the plunge?

....I wouldn't count on, or expect to them work, but if they do it's a bonus. I think there was another thread a few ago about the same model, or that series which couldn't get them working.

If the Windows driver works, then it's just a matter of installing the software.

That's how I've always rolled, as it's a great way to learn imo. ;)

Did it get solved?

If the Windows driver works, then it's just a matter of installing the software.
Can you also suggest a software?

Unfortunately no, and not through lack of trying.

Can you also suggest a software?
Sorry, I'm being quite lazy, but I've been on the road all day so quite tired, and thought you might have taken the numerous hints about "learning" :p Only joking, you could try this...

Arcsoft WebCam Companion Software

...which is from Sony, but if that doesn't work let us know and we'll try something else.

If the FN keys don't work, it will be a pain, as this series of Vaio does not have extra keys for Home, End, PgUp, PgDn alongwith other FN keys Mute, Volume, Brightness, Zoom, Scr Lk, Pause Break.

That came pre-installed with Vaio alongwith Magic-I. Is that a trial version link?

Copy and Paste the id string and we can see if their is another manufacturer using the same hardware with driver and application support for it. Need to know 32 or 64 bit to do this.

Nope, it's the full version.
Thanks! :D Do you have link to Magic-I as well?

Tried clean installing Windows 7 Professional; when in 'Where do you want to install?' [after selecting Custom (Advanced) option], I am not getting the Advanced option for format (clean install) under the listed HDD partitions.

Have posted my query here, pls assist.

But you'll need extract the exe with Universal Extractor and then you'll have to run the setup file inside the "tempexe" folder.

Sorry, dint get this; can you explain this part in detail?
BTW Repped you for all your support.

:rolleyes::p

The exe that you download from Sony, is model specific, so will only install on certain models, and in order to bypass that check you need to extract all the files contained within the exe file.

So....

1. Download and install Universal Extractor

2. (should have it already) Download the Magic-I software.

3. Run UE, which will then ask you to choose the file you want to extract from.

4. Use the default option, and begin the extraction.

5. Open the new folder created by UE and you will find a folder called TempExe.

Open that, run the setup.exe, and Bobs your uncle. :)
