Problems with new PC build

I put a Gigabyte GA-m720-us3 with a AMD 965 Quad and an ATI5770 and when i boot the pc the hdd clicks 5 times for 30 secs then continues to load does any 1 know why this is and it is really slow for a quad as my other 1 i built with a asrock MOBO worked fine any help would be greatly appreciated

You may want to test the drive using one of these programs: Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.

ots fine according to all tests and it works fineafter the 30 secs of clicking and blank screen so not to sure how to fix it

What hard drive do you have? Try Googling to see if others have the same issue.

I can't be sure without being there and hearing it for my self, but that sounds an awful lot like the infamous "click of death" that HDDs make just before they go. Make sure you back up your data ASAP, regardless.

I tryed the HDD in my other pc and it boots first time fine with no noise im sure its the MOBO as it is set to read sata as IDE and if i change it it dont boot and it just goes blane for 30 secs then load again

You need to enable AHCI in the registry before you can switch over.

Some of the Gigabyte Mobos have a hidden function in the bios which has more advanced settings ...

Press "delete" at boot up to enter the bios then when in the bios press "ctrl+F1" this may give you access to some of the more adavanced features that Gigabyte have to offer. Sometimes there are some settings that need to be turned on/off which may change the way/speed that your PC boots up.

Most of the settings are for overclocking but I have had previous experience where some of the "advanced settings" were set incorrectly and caused some major problems.

Please take care when changing any of these settings as you could make things worse, but if you have any questions, feel free to post them up and I'm sure we could try and give you a hand.

I tryed the above suggerstion and it lets me use that oprtion now and not ide but it still didnt fix the main problem if it taking 30 secs to load from power button to help explain what i mean i uploaded a vid to utube to show u. YouTube - Broken Gigabyte Start up this show exsactly what it does.

This is how I would go about trouble shooting your problem

1. Disconnect everything from your MB apart from 1 stick memory, Graphics card, Hard Drive. (obviously you need your CPU and PSU)
2. Try and boot up.
3. If it boots "normally" ie. doesn't take 30 sec then goto 4.
4. Connect each "Device" one at a time ie. CDROM, extra Hard drives etc.

If you connect a device and it boots slowly again then this is where your problem is.
I had a problem about 2 weeks ago where a PC was taking along time to boot and it was because a games DVD was left in the DVD ROM, even though the boot sequence was set correctly (boot from HDD 0 first do not boot from other devices setting) the PC still took ages to start up. I removed the DVD and the PC started normally .... wierd

When you changed your motherboard did you reinstall windows?

This sounds an awfull lot like SATA driver incompatibility with your new hardware. In fact changing motherboards almost always breaks the OS...

i reinbstalled windows straight away and it just does this clicking and and long wait

See if you can find a BIOS update for your motherboard.

its updated to the latest version and other people that have this board dont have this problem i think its to do with a connection or something.

Well you can try changing out the SATA cable.

Look at the first 2 stickys.

This may be a design flaw on that motherboard. It seems that there are a number of SATA issues with nVidia chipsets. I did not read anything about your 720D chipset, but the 680i and 780i both have the issue. I did not spend a lot of time looking either, just curiosity.

Make sure that HDD is OK first. That MB has SATA 3.0 capability so you may need to check that the transfer rate of the drive matches the BIOS setting. You can always try the drive in another computer too.

That article refers to ZIP disks... an old style cartridge drive that had problems with bad media messing up the drive heads... It's got nothing to do with hard disks.

This is possible... The OP should look in hardware manager and see if it lists the NVIDIA SATA Controller.... if not, installing the lastest NForce driver might be his answer. Also... if that SATA controller is not installed, enabling AHCI in the BIOS may cause the problem he's having.... The "quick check" for this is to go into BIOS and set his hard disks into "Compatibility", "DMA" or "IDE" mode... (it's called different things in different BIOSs)

I have now managed to fox the problem by doing alot of looking and finding out on another forum that there is a beta bios update out i applied it and it now works find cheers guys for all the help
