Windows boots then hangs after network icon appears

I've already spent 12 hours on this, reduced the startup to microsoft only, and a whole slew of other fixes that I know, and I've learned many in my 15 years as a tech.

What's happening is that Windows 7 Home is booting into windows, loads the notification, power, and network icons but the network icon is holding for 20-30 minutes. I have tried driver upgrades, removal, etc. the only thing I haven't removed is the virtual wifi miniport but that is next on the list.

I will admit that I'm fairly new to servicing some of the quirks of windows 7, so I don't claim to know all (as if I could :p)

Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the sevenforums outerregion!

I'd point my finger at the network card, connection, or drivers... since that's where it hangs. To help us on this and any future issues, please complete filling in your system specs. Is this a desktop or laptop?

Have you checked your connection? Wired or wireless??? Try a different cable, or port if your mobo has dual nics. Maybe try a different port on your router too (if you have a router). Check your routers DHCP settings, do you ever get an IP?

It'd be a little hard to fill in my details as I'm working on someone elses system. I'm a computer tech by trade. My system runs great (if a little slow due to age).

The computer in question is an Asus Aspire 7535-5415

Also this problem occurs whether the network is plugged in or not. I have turned off the wifi with the hardware switch as well.

I will in the future endeavour to specify the system I'm working on.

You running homegroup? sometimes on some systems homegroup has "connectivity problems" You can verify it by making a new connection using workgroup instead.

Same results, I tried removing the drivers but unfortunately windows reinstalls them during boot (for the wired)

I'm almost at the point where I'm gonna try a reinstall (using the Asus recovery disks)

Yeah, I do like Asus :p (It's the only Mobo I buy).

I'm trying a complete reinstall of all the drivers, starting with the networks

Update:
So I did all but the video and bluetooth drivers (bluetooth not detected) and still getting the same error

WTH??? Rule one of driver installation, always start with chipset drivers...

A thougth... are any of those drivers .exe files? If so, you may be able to locate a "drivers" folder and just "point" device to the drivers folder and avoid the install... if that applies.

Yeah, He thinks it might of been when he attempted to install lexmark printer drivers, or the virus he found a few weeks before.

I personally think a file got corrupted and wasn't loading properly. He just picked it up and was happy, so ... Yay :)

Now to get a new fan for my Win 7 Laptop

If your client has a large enough external drive I suggest using Win7's built in image backup software once you get this baby completely configured the way you/client needs it. That way if a problem crops up in the future you have a better image restore than the factory discs.

to my knowledge, he has no external drives, which is ironic with 2 laptops and an older desktop.

He has 2 Thumb drives, but uses them for music in his van.
