Once a Pic is uploaded to the web without any "disclaimers" then generally it can be treated as Public Domain - so long as these images aren't used for commercial products or sold.
Again, that's not true. The image is protected by international copyright laws. The internet is not "public property." That's a very common misconception. I've had to study up on this very thing, because I was involved with a site that offered graphics for public use, and also sold graphics. Needless to say, there was some pretty sticky situations that arose from that scenario.

That's like saying "If you don't want your software hacked, then don't provide download links." Honestly, I would rather not argue about this issue, but if you think about it, what's so different between software, and images? Nothing really.

Youtube's attitude to video clips is a bit confusing. I often embed youtube clips in Google Wave or in the "what are you listening to" thread on SF.
Sometimes you cannot watch the embedded version and have to go to the youtube page other times you don't.

Understandable on this forum perhaps but Google own both youtube and Wave:huh:

All websites are copyrighted, even those without a copyright symbol on them. So technically, that's stealing, and breaking copyright law. I'm not just making this up. You can easily do a search on copyright laws for images. And by the way, I don't care if people right click and save images, then use them on the net. I'm just informing people that it is indeed copyright infringement. It's not like I've never done it. Of course I have.

It's too hard to police images, so if somebody complains their image is being used without their permission, we remove them.

But if I put a link up to some pirated software you'd remove it immediately (and ban me) I suspect, regardless of whether the copyright holder contacted you or no.

@MadMaxData you are right about the copyright, however it does not hold up in court. My dad, uncle and a long list of friends are professional photographers and now are GFX people. There was a law suit because of downloaded pictures from our web site and guess what we lost because the pictures were not copyrighted or watermarked, even though the site was copyrighted. The problem here is that since your web browser downloads the pictures they are on your computer when you view the web site so then just browsing the web page would be considered stealing. The judge in the case stated that you HAVE to watermark them and/or put a copyright on them. If they do NOT have the watermark or the copyright then the pictures are fair game due to how the internet works. I am not saying this is right but you have to see it from a judge’s point of view if he up holds the law for a picture that my family made but you download the same picture just by viewing the web site they he needs to place judgment on you too. All professional GFX people I work with put a watermark of some sort on their work, there is no doubt where the work came from or who made it. Putting it on the internet without such a mark is just plan crazy if you are getting paid for your work or you don’t want it stolen.

I also agree if you ask the artist for permission 90% of the time they will give you permission. Artists are wonderful giving people I come from a long line of them.

Just like all the people here that give their time freely to help people with their IT issues.

That's odd. I know a woman who was involved in a lawsuit like that, and the judge ruled in her favor. He said the images were the property of the domain (DNS). Perhaps your family could have used a better attorney.

Parks are public places too, but I can't go and rip off their picnic benches, grills, and garbage cans....LOL...same thing. The city/state owns the park, just like the DNS owns a website. But like I said, I really don't care what you guys do concerning images. But I do know the law, from firsthand experience.

I'm just going to keep any further comments to myself. I can see where this is going.

Since he is co-admin to a website, it would seem that he should know whether it is copyrighted or not. If one website exists that is not copyrighted, it would seem that others might also. If you have information otherwise, the you should provide that, rather than telling us to "look it up".

A DNS is totally different than a host server that has websites. A person can use many different DNS servers to navigate to different website. Until recently, I used Google DNS, but Google did not own any of the website that I went to...except Google itself.

As for image ownership, Google Images provides zillions of images, without regard to ownership.

Quite a few PSP groups.. are very careful how they handle their designs.. and state such plainly on their web sites.. YOU or I know not to take those.. would never take anyones.. creations .. those things take hours or days to creat..plus there are layers upon layers to each one.
I'm very ethical.. I never think of taking their work.
I would / request a tag with my nick on it.. .. from them.. which is usually given freely.. I have thousands of gorgeous tags.. last time I checked I had over 30,000 tags.. all kinds for all kinds of ocassions.holidays.. birthdays..

if you get it from the internet you are getting a copy and not the original, therefore it has no value. if you don't want other people to have a copy of your pic, don't put it up on the 'net. thats the only way.
