Ok, so I have a problem where Windows 7 hangs when creating a new folder and hangs again when renaming it.

I have documented this problem on my blog here:

This has my hardware details, etc...

I consider myself an expert at troubleshooting (being in support for over 10 years including time as a Lead Technician doing Windows 2000 support focussing on performance), and have checked quite a few things to try to pinpoint this issue, but I just can't find the cause.

I am asking others if they have seen this issue. I need to know if it is only on my workstation, or if others are seeing it as well.

Have you ever right-clicked, chose new folder and then had to wait 45 seconds for a new folder to appear.

Then the same thing when you try to rename the new folder, a hang of about 45 seconds before the new name take affect.

Anyway, let me know if you have experienced ths.

I have only seen it hang for a couple of seconds, and that is only on random occassions. I rarely use Windows Explorer, so I had assumed that even the times that it did hang for a moment was due to the third party file manager that I use, but am not certain.

Now that I am paying attention, it did it when I made a new text file. It did it when I created a new library and when adding a new file to the library.

Yes, same problem here. I cant be sure when it started or what I did previously when it began (installed Windows Updates, installed a program, etc.) but I am continutally having problems when doing these simple tasks such as creating a new folder, renaming, etc.

Hopefully MS catches onto this soon and offers the update/patch for it. Its getting annoying.

I do not see in your original posting on your blog....have you tried creating a new user in Windows 7 and see if the same thing happens?

What anti-virus are you running?

Most scan whenever something new is created in the file system... depending on settings in the AV it might cause the delay you're seeing...

Also ASRock ION 330 as HTPC (on XP).

Has the OP tried a new user profile yet? I would be interested in the results.

I had the same problem exactly,

I found out that it was the Antivirus real time scanner which was the one to blame. (ESET)
apparently, i had some large files with HTML extension (DDL's) and each time i tried to rename or create a file or folder in that area the RT tried to scan them.
resolve the issue by renaming the files or changing the antivirus...

hope it helped....

Don't know that this would help him, considering it seems that this was working fine at one point.

Sorry...I have updated my blog entry with comments, but didn't update here.

I have determined it is something to do with going into hibernate mode.

If my computer has gone to hibernate mode, this happens when it comes out of hibernate mode.

I have to kill explorer.exe or reboot to make it work.

I had a feeling that this could be something corrupt in the registry. Disable Hibernation first and if disabling that does not work, maybe you should look into, scanning for viruses, changing your antivirus, or using a registry cleaner such as CCleaner that can help remove corrupt registry entries and clear junk files that also slow the system.

Corrupt registry entries do slow or make things in the PC harder to work.

i am using kaspersky since last 3 years in vista no such problem was there.

No, it isn't corruption. It isn't a virus, trust me. It is just a flat out bug (with either windows or a hardware driver) that only occurs after waking up from hibernation.

I can do a clean install of Windows 7 and duplicate the issue immediately by going to hibernate and waking up.

Confirmed! We're seeing the exact thing happening on our Win 7 / Sony laptop.

Not always after the first hibernation event, but certainly after the first couple.

We are currently experimenting with the Win search/indexing to see if that fixes it...
