Windows 7 Market Share Twice That of OS X, 10 Times That of Linux.

At the end of March 2010, there were twice as many computers running Windows 7 as machines with Mac OS X installed, although the latest iteration of the Windows client was released to the market just five months ago. According to statistics from Net Applications, Windows 7 currently accounts for no less than 10.23% of the OS market, having grown from 8.92% at the end of February 2010. The data provided by the Internet metrics company also indicates that Windows 7’s market share is tenfold that of all Linux distributions put together. The Linux market share grew from 0.98% to 1.03% in the past two months, that of Mac OS X from 5.02% to 5.33%.

93.64% of computers are running Microsoft Windows. This just shows how windows completely dominates the computer market. Microsoft will probably rule the computer market for decades to come.

Even if Google puts out a halve way decent OS it still will not match Microsoft in power. People and business are not going to just jump over to Google because they put out an OS. And, if Google puts one out the best guess it will be another Linux release. . .not saying it will be, but who knows.

But even with the impressive numbers for Win7 and Windows in general, it must be noted that both OSX and Linux continue to chip away (although slowly) parts of the Windows turf.

I would be pretty interested to see what would happen in retail stores if the Apple Macbooks and iMacs were a little more competitively priced. I think that a majority of Microsoft desktop ownership comes from the fact that every computer pretty much has it installed on day 1 (with the exception of Apple machines).

With Windows 7, the data in the [Forrester] reports show that upgrading existing PCs was a much stronger trend with Windows 7.

i find this to be particularly telling... either people are still biased against Vista, or XP is showing its age

I don't know how XP cannot be showing it's age. Just install Windows 7 and look at how nice it looks out of the box....then install XP and notice the outdated Fisher Price theme.

Also, with XP..you have to install the OS, then chipset drivers, then hardware drivers, then service packs, then Windows updates...just to get the box usable. With Windows 7 you just install the OS, chances are high than 90%+ of your hardware is working right out of the box, you can hit Windows update and you are up and on your way. It's just so much faster to setup.

Bias against Vista is probably justified. At release it had quite a number of issues. And there are certainly people who never bothered installing service packs or patches who are still stuck with these older builds. Plus, Vista is getting old...and as we all know after lots of installs and uninstalls and general purpose use....Windows naturally slows down. The average joe doesn't spend the time necessary doing normal maintenance to prevent these issues. Therefore, they often compare their old slow Vista system with a modern Windows 7 system and cannot help but notice how much slower it is.

I don't think that Mac and Linux are chipping away at window's turf, I think they are just having more babys than windows users.

Have to say, with Windows 7 MS got the 'look and feel' absolutely spot-on. I know folks make comparisons between Vista and Windows 7 but I preferred the look and feel of XP (I mean compared to Vista). Deliberately eschewed Vista - just horrid!

It should be noted as well that in my experience anyway, OS X and Linux users tend to be way more loyal and spirited than Windows users. People who use OS X and Linux genuinely like the operating system and want to use it. They're proud. On the other hand, while that market does exist in the Windows genre, most people using Windows are only using it because its the only thing they know how to use and/or the only thing available to them.

For example, in terms of how well I think the operating system works in terms of the average user, I'd rate OS X ten times higher than Windows. I have both operating systems installed on my computer and most older people (those who have never used a computer before) will have an easier time figuring out how to use OS X than Windows. Not to mention I think the operating system looks ten times better and functions ten times better. Then again, I'm biased. The only reason I use Windows is to play video games. If all of the video games I play were suddenly available on Mac (Yay to Steam on Mac coming soon) I wouldn't touch Windows.

To be honest younger people are really getting sucked into the Apple hype and marketing and are buying Mac's.

So I think in the years to come I think Microsoft are going to lose some ground.

Well considering we are on a Windows site I would not consider use to love Apple stuff lol.

But in college and even younger they are all buying ipod's, iphones, maybe now ipads. I even notice the younger crowd looking at Apple computers at BestBuy etc.

I am kind of worried to be honest. PC makers need to come out with some cooler laptop and desktops. Max out what windows 7 can do!!

There used to be a time when the out of the box Mac interface looked very nice and polished...especially compared to Windows XP. However, compared to Windows 7, I find the OSX interface to be very bland and plain. That depressive gray/silver background and same 'ole dock that's been around forever is starting to show it's age.

I see all kinds of people looking at Mac's in the store. But the trend is usually the same. "They are nice, but too expensive". It's something that people seem to want to aspire to owning, but most never take that plunge. I've tried OSX a handful of times and have played with a few genuine apples' at home, a hackintosh and a Macbook...and I simply don't care for them.

since windows is heavily geared towards workflow, productivity and engineering it won't ever be as "hip" as Mac OS. Unfortunately most people don't really use the computer for productivity and to listen to some tunes, and doing a website a Mac is sufficient. but at workplaces you either have cheap computers (clerical work) where the Mac is too expensive, or you need heavy working units for CAD etc. and Mac doesn't even have a machine for that (not even for much money) and doesn't have any support for professional software. I think the Adobe suite is the only professional software for Macs. Everything else runs on PC. In the old days most computers were used "at work" hence the dominance of the PC. now also the people that don't really use the computer for productivity (average Joe) the Mac has a stand. funny thing about Mac users: they always tell us how superior Mac OS is, but the first thing they do is install MS Office and windows. go figure!

I just reinstalled Vista - it runs beautifully.


At least the press learned a lesson. The journalists had a rough time past year or two - pc mags closing, merging, being asked to submit articles for less , etc.

They have realised the contraction in the market , tho largely due to the economy, was not helped by sensationalist negative reporting.

They probabaly thought it would gain them readers - it had the opposite effect - depressing the entire market for hardware, software, related reading , etc.

They have to "big up " the new o/s to try and stimulate demand.

It seems to be working - there appears to be an upturn in pc mag sales ( here at least) and a brisk business in the large book style mags that sell for book prices.

Some journos are doing well out of praising 7.
