Image theft is piracy too

It's very easy to tell if software is pirate, how the hell do you expect me to check images?

This falls more on the category of Plagiarism than Piracy. Piracy is stealing something you're supposed to pay for. Posting a copywritten image without permission or not crediting the original creator automatically means you consider the item as your own and is thus, plagiarism.

I usually blur my tag in photos I post. LPt is correct; it is not safe.

My attitude towards the whole thing is read the fine print.
On my website I have many pictures which I don't own but I am allowed to use for marketing purposes (including about 2/3 of the site logo. There are no visible copywrite signs or disclaimers as to who owns the images on the pages the images are displayed, instead I just stuck a big 'all images are Copywrite -CompanyName- 2010' at the end of the terms and conditions.

So if someone comes onto my website without reading the T&Cs (which most people do) they would assume I own the images and that if they quoted my name or the company's name when reposting the images somewhere that that would be totally legal and just (which of course it isn't).

I'll probably get into trouble for posting this but whilst the forum frowns strongly on software, movie and music piracy I notice nothing is said about copyright theft of still images, both as images posted on the boards and for a fair number of themes and customisations.

What are your views on this?

I've been involved in discussions like this on other forums in the past. It's actually perfectly legal under the internet "fair use" laws. So long as you're not making monetary gain from it, it's perfectly legal to reproduce images u find.

Also, if people are that intent on keeping their images from being downloaded, all they have to do is disable the right click. It's a very simple java code.

About the only time that I can see that image protection is called for, is like when thumbnails are provided for art print sales, like on eBay, but they have other methods to protect them. Either they watermark the print to make it undesirable to simply copy, or I have seen where that they did something that caused the resolution to go awry, so that when copying a print it becomes blurry or pixelated. In circumstances such as this, there is a financial consideration involved, but by far, the majority of images on the internet are not for sale. Unless the images were personal photos, I don't understand the need to protect them. If there was some other reason someone didn't want them copied, they shouldn't put them on the internet.

This is true but if you're like me if you want to copy an image you just drag and drop it onto your desktop (I'm a Mac user at heart) and you don't even bother with right clicking most of the time then it really is too easy to get round.

The only foolproof way to prevent copy protection (without using print screen) is to embed your image into a flash applet.

On the other hand, a billboard is in public domain, and anyone can take a photograph as they please, however that doesn't necessarily mean that it could be used for financial gain. but when on the internet you do a "copy" and paste, not a "rip off the original from the owner" and paste. more akin to the quote below. where you just pop in and take a pic and whatever you wanted to see, so you're not really stealing anything.
