Move on or attempt to fix it?

As some of you know, my laptop broke. What I've gathered with the help of Victor the Wise from HP (don't ask), Chris (Zidane) and Smarteyeball (Smarteyeball). The graphics on the board are fried since I can actually boot into an OS, just no display appears (Even on external).

HP's price to repair the laptop: $421 w/ taxes

Now I know I could get the board on ebay for less then $180, just want SF's opinion!

My answer would be determined by the specs of the lappy. A $180 repair on an $800 machine would be worth it IMO. A $350? Probably not.

Depending on the age of the computer (especially if it is older), you would be better off getting a new one.

Specs are as followed;

CPU: Intel C2D T6400 @ 2.0Ghz
RAM: 2x2GB DDR2 800MHz
Graphics: Intel GMA 4500MHD, but I'd likely get the board that has nVidia graphics (it'd be compat with all my stuff)

HDD: 320gb 5400rpm SATA drive
WiFi: Broadcom 4311 WLAN B/G

12 cell battery to

Paid $650 last march for it.

Let's see, gonna cost over $400.00 to have HP do it (which I say no to, btw) or you can get a replacement mobo (and attempt to do the surgery yourself) off of eBay for less than $200.00?

If you're okay with with spending $200.00 on an educational project, go for it.

For $180+ I would be tempted, provided the maninboard is good. It would be worth it considering it's age and your usage for it.

I'd just double check that those mainboards will definitely be compatible.

I get what your saying. I just have a hard time with a motherboard being fried. No it's not, something ON the motherboard is fried. Sell me the chip for 10 bucks? [in a perfect world]

I know, I know. I'm not only a tight wad, but hate to waste PC hardware. It's a pet peeve.

I just bought a 15" Gateway with practically the same specs as yours for $499. So the HP repair bill is out in my book. I would not venture to repair a laptop. They are like swiss watches. Everything is tiny.
In any case, I would take it apart first and see how much I broke before buying the bits. LOL.

my desktop is almost identical specs, (1Gb less ram, the graphics card is probably worse than yours, and has a smaller hard drive) and i payed £200 for it (minus screen) so no, there is no way i would pay the HP bill... in my money it works out to the same price as the whole damn system,

No I never tried, but then I never had the need to do so. I am already challenged by my big boxes. Since 3 months I have a new (faster) CPU sitting on my desk for my HP desktop. It is still sitting there. I hate to crawl under the desk and untether everything.

I hear that. If I didn't do PC repair simply because I'm desperately in need of the cash, I probably wouldn't mess around with a laptop either. They aren't the big headache some people make them out to be though. However, it takes patience for sure!

$200 vs $400+ sounds like a worthy risk.

I'd attempt a repair. It's not too bad working inside a laptop. I've done a full motherboard replacement on a couple of laptops before, and the worst part of it is just remembering which screw goes where

I know where everything goes.

As for the desktop comment, desktops are cheaper and easier to fix.

Also, if my laptop's graphics were NOT integrated I would just swap them out. But NOOO HP made the board have integrated graphics.
