Win 7 64 RAM filling up. Memory leak outside windows?

Enter the fanbois! By the way, I haven't used AVG since last year.

Enter the fanbois! By the way, I haven't used AVG since last year.

Please list your installed programs. At risk of sounding like an "anti-fanboi" I have one native MKV filter in mind. You'd know what I'm talking about if you understood what NATIVE in Windows 7 media really means -- it is a Media Foundation filter or not?

Hi,
Same memory leak problem here !
I'll give you some infos on my sys to help out :

Since the very first install of win 7 64 on my new Crucial SSD, I have this leak. Slowly but surely, after each and almost any program use, my memory fill up until I need to restart my sys.

Freq used prgr :

Java (when I use it, my memory jumps at least for 1 GB and never goes down).
Outlook (not sure of what it eats)
MPC & KMP player (for watching MKV & Avi movies. Memory get eaten a bit each time)
I use google chrome to surf the internet
I run Avira Antivir Personal to protect my sys and win7 integrated firewall
I run games (like starcraft 2 beta mostly those times) and it jumps for 1,5 GB never going back down.

Hope it helps,

I'll get back with a program list, but I have noticed that the problem seems to center around particular .mkvs. I convert my dvds to mkv for media serving, and I discovered the one that was causing the most problems recently no longer has an MD5 checksum match to its backup, which plays perfectly.

This is not the only problem, because Windows leaks into memory on many occasions, but a corrupted .mkv seems to be a major trigger for it...

What are you all basing these "leaks" on? What memory metric provided by what authority? Just because "Free" memory in Task Manager goes down does NOT mean you have a leak.

Previously I had run ZoomPlayer install center and checked every filter available, including ffdshow, Gabest filters, etc; I reinstalled windows and installed just these items, and it seems to be OK at the moment:
HTPC%20Working%20Programs.JPG

I don't think it requires any particular "authority" to confirm that memory usage is actually reaching 4GB when the system becomes unresponsive as quickly and as permanently as it has been.

Did you ever have a look in Resource Monitor > Performance tab. It would be interesting to see the distribution in the color bar. If, e.g., you would have a lot of orange (Modified), a larger page file could alleviate the problem.

The issue is that this goes from 1GB used to 3.8GB used in a matter of seconds, and only stops when killed or system lock; it could fill a 2TB pagefile if it was allowed.

Another reason it's definitely a leak is that a 700MB file can fill up 4GB of ram.

I would do a "Diagnostic Startup" using msconfig.exe, and check memory usage after a while to see if the memory leak persists.
If there is NO leak : I'll re-enable the startup entries one by one and continue this series of test.
If there is still a leak, the maybe a low level system component (not necessary MS side) could be the origin of the problem such as : hardware driver, antivirus, ... and I'll have to uninstall and recheck one by one.
This how I'd do, hope it'll help you.

Regards

I meant what was the source of your information re: memory usage. When it's starting to really fill up -- getting close to the limit of your physical memory, do you notice virtual allocation increase? Seems odd that you're not starting to swap first. Also, keep task manager running in the tray by selecting Options menu, Hide when minimized. Then click Show processes from all users on the Processes tab and add the Peak Working Set and Working Set Delta columns from under the View menu, Select columns. Let it run that way. Working Set Delta will constantly grow for the leaking process.

It happened again randomly, after I thought it was gone. This time the movie file (12GB) actually played, and seek was very responsive, considering that other programs were slow due to full RAM.
Mem%20Full2.JPG

After closing the movie file, this memory level remained, and nothing reduced it until I opened the same file again. While the same file was playing the second time, it looked like this:
Mem%20Full3.JPG

Working set delta was zero for every process, with slight excursions positive and negative for things like MOM, svchost, etc.

It's Z player from the look of it. 7 "hides" some details due to protected path. Processes loading that are exempt from primary or secondary debugging info so memory issues are hidden. I suspect a codec but to be sure try a different player with the same movie.

cant help but add problem to this thread T_T, lm currently using 2.3GB of my 3GB of ram, system uptime was about 12hours and l was only using a comfortable 37% of my ram, however after watching a few hours of video files through Media Player Classic (which was with CCCP, tried k-lite codecs but they didnt work out well) lm using about 60/70% of ram..

l do notice that BitDefender is using a reasonable bit (plan to let licence run out before l try other software) however lve tweaked it a little and turned off the search indexing service as well, lm wondering if there are any other tweaks l could do to lower ram usage at least until l get extra ram, tho as l said above ram usage goes up allot when l watch video files and never really drops after that. (tho firefox is taking a reasonable chunk of memory as well :p)

Try using MPCHC....
It works like a charm. I've never had any issues with it on a Win 7 x64 box that I have hooked up to a 52' sharp TV.

I am getting the same issue again, this time with the same windows version on an entirely new rig. It happens whenever I open an .mkv whether 700mb or 15GB, with zoomplayer and wmp.

No kidding... There are a lot of really bad MKV codecs out there.

Switch over to Media Player Classic - Home Cinema - Video Player Problem solved...

MKV at 1080p ac3 5.1 on an Intel Atom / Nvidia ION machine... 8% cpu usage and less than 10mb memory usage.

MPC has all the codecs built right in, so you can remove the ones you no longer need... and since it will play just about anything you throw at it, you can also remove WMP totally from your system.

Also ASRock ION 330 as HTPC (on XP).
Acer Aspire as GP netbook (on XP).
Please note that Win 7 overall does use RAM very efficiently. These problems appear to be isolated to MKV and/or player/codecs files in general and therefore not windows memory usage as the prime suspect.

Look at using different video file formats to see if the problem continues. Then look at the player itself.
I have not experienced these problems myself as I do not watch MKV files.

This has nothing to do with fanboism, only trying to point where the actual problem is and not where it isn't.

so far lve noticed it with both AVIs and MKVs on my system, however lve messed around with the settings a little, tweaked bitdefender to use less ram, and admittedly turned off search indexing and superfetch (at least for the time being, rather than have it off permanently l just wanna see the impact on the ram over a weeks worth of usage etc,)

Problem not solved, that would not change the codecs at all. I use CoreAVC Pro which is the premium matroska filter bar none, and MPC would use the same one or a lesser one. Zoom player is "the culprit" only in the sense that the problem happens when it's open, but it contains no filter of it's own.

I know it's a matroska issue, but it's been working now for another week, but I'll keep tabs on it.
