Sorry...Linux just dosent insight as much excitement as it used to.

With windows 7 such a massive hit, who needs it?

Sure its a great "free" OS for servers. But I would run server 08 over it first.

I'm sure I'll get flamed for this but.

Linux is pretty much dead.

Lost a little luster from the Windows 7 release? Yes
Dead? Not by a long shot!

Linux will be around a long time even if it takes it mutating into a different beast. Please do not forget that OSX is actually a striped down version of Free BSD and I don't see Macs dying anytime soon.

I will have to agree that my interest in the newest addition to the Ubuntu collection does not excite me very much. I usually wait a couple of releases and then try it again so that I can actually see the changes that have taken place.

If Ubuntu can produce a more user friendly OS out of the box then we have ourselves a legitimate contender.

Another way of looking at this is, thanks to Linux, OSX and others, Microsoft rolled 7 out the way it did.
Linux share is miniscule at the moment for the desktop markets however, what would have been the alternative if Windows was the only OS available?
Would we be running 7 (in its current form)?

As MS continues to update Win7 and makes Win8 available Apple and Linux alike will suffer, there is no doubt.

The I'm a PC - I'm a Mac tv comercials have vanished from the tv as best I can tell. But the I'm a PC and Windows 7 was my idea, are everywhere.

Linux and Macs are not dead(entirely) but if MS continues improveing like they have they are destined for the "specialized" bin intstead of the "mainsteam".

I said I would be flamed. And this is all my opinon, but I do 6 or more Win7 installs a week and i havent had a OSX or Linux request in months.

To me it looks like MS has won.

I never stated that it was going to overtake NT.
What I asked for was the alternative- If Microsoft was the only desktop OS provider, would we be running with Windows 7?

Hi Joel,

Where I work, the primary systems are running Unix - some are being ported slowly to Linux (cost considerations but more so because of architecture).
We did try to introduce a component of the full system using Windows as the OS. It has not been deployed operationally despite our work on it since 2006 (could be just us ) :o
Having said that, given my personal experience with Windows 7, I have been asking the question as to whether Windows is now ready to finally make inroads into mission-critical systems?

Hi Lomai

Mission critical?

If you mean life or death? Probably not. I would feel uncomfortable leaving a system of any kind in that situation.

Thats just me.

Hospitals on the other hand seem to trust MS for their monitoring systems. And those are mostly XP and 2003 base systems. Not Linux or Macs.

Macs are pretty much a over priced joke.

Linux is at least interesting.

But thats about it.

Sorry...Linux just dosent insight as much excitement as it used to.
Well, coupled with the fact that it's a new release every 6 months as opposed to every 3 years or more...the releases do tend to be a little less exciting.

With windows 7 such a massive hit, who needs it?
I'm not sure that Windows 7 has had any impact on my desire to run Linux machines. Windows 7 was certainly nice out of the gate and a better performing system than Vista was out of the gate...but Vista wasn't all that bad after some service packs and many people still want to cling to Windows XP. Windows is Windows to me. It's for the general masses. I never really got to a point where I recommended Linux or installed it on the average joe's computer because Vista wasn't good enough for them.

Sure its a great "free" OS for servers. But I would run server 08 over it first.
If your primary level of experience is with Windows, I would expect nothing less.

However, as a seasoned Admin with many years experience with both, it's going to come down to which fits the need the best. To me, it's absurd to spend money on Windows licensing to run a website on Windows that would run perfectly fine under Apache or Tomcat. A dedicated machine that's hosting an FTP server is a great Linux fit...again no sense paying for a Microsoft license to run this type of server. If you work for a company that runs their own external DNS servers....why not run BIND like the rest of the world does.

One thing that I find fastastic about Linux servers is the ease of setting them up. While many Windows users are terrified of the command line...the ability to completely set a box up with a dozen or so commands and a few file copies is worth it's weight in gold.

Linux is pretty much dead.
Not for me. I've got tons of servers at work running Linux. And I've machines at home running it as well. As much as I like Windows 7...I don't want to pay $100+ for a copy for each of my machines. My kids are perfectly content surfing the web from a Linux machine and I'm happy because they dont' usually screw up the box and are just about impervious to viruses, spyware, malware, etc.

Like I said pparks1 Linux is big in the server market. But Windows has been gaining since 2003.

Windows just makes computing easier and with their new found stability it will start making its way into areas that it was previously locked out of.

Still this tread is losing its point.

A new version of Linux is about to launch.

My point was...

I could definitely add a few things here like a contrast between the previous ubuntu 9.10 and 7 for one. http://www.sevenforums.com/chillout-room/34659-windows-7-vs-ubuntu-9-10-strengths-weaknesses.html

And then there are times when Windows simply won't run for some reason and you just happen to need some important file maybe for work or school still on your drive? Or perhaps you have decided to reformat the drive due to too many problems with an installation but don't want to lose any files? http://www.sevenforums.com/chillout-room/11844-using-other-os-usb-rescue-device.html

Small live distros like ubuntu, more recent releases of Puppy Linux like 4.21, and now considerably larger a bootable dvd-r with Knoppix can serve as a live rescue OS and still have a purpose. Linux won't be dead anytime soon simply not the main OS most will choose.

Yes, and as technical people who want to know as much as we can about Windows 7...we absolutely owe it to ourselves to use and discuss the competition as well to understand what else it out there.
