I got a new netbook from Asus with Windows 7 starter, I disable the services I dont need w/c is similarly configured on my desktop and after a reboot I cannot run msconfig.exe and services.msc

I get this error message "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it"

I am at a loss on w/c service controls this, need help

EDIT:

Under safemode, both services and msconfig runs fine.

The answer seems to be in the question when you say "I disable the services I dont need"! Try a system restore back to before you disabled the services. I hope you created a restore point before you embarked on the disabling route.

Open Services.msc in safe mode and try reenabling the services you disabled in the first place. If you dont remember, enable them all. IIRC, the service called "Application Information Service" should be the culprit.

Also, download malwarebytes antimalware (its freeware) and scan.

Already did, I think the pre-installed Trend Antivirus is one of the culprits

You need to download Malwarebytes from here:
AntiMalware Pro - Remove Malware & Spyware From your Computer Now!
The Trend A/V that was pre-installed - are you looking to uninstall that? Is it one of the services that you disabled?

For future reference, if you don't know what a service does, then you should leave it at it's default setting. Obviously, since you had to ask which service was causing the problem, you need a better understanding of what your doing before you go messing around with the services. Just a thought.

The advise that bill2 gave me nailed it, actually I also have this disabled on my PC and never had this issue.. I guess this must be a windows 7 starter edition issue. Thanks bill2.

You say you have Win 7 Starter edition, which is ,I understand, only available in 32 bit, but your system spec shows Windows 7 Ultimate X64?

Could also be remote procedure call or half a dozen others.

The important thing to understand is that services are not pick and choose... some of these things have to be running for windows to work right.

Our friend my have bounght himself a reinstall...

Exactly! I stopped counting how many machines I've had to repair because someone decided to go crazy disabling services to "speed up" their OS, but didn't have a clue as to what they were actually doing. I just leave mine at default now. If you have a good enough CPU, and enough memory you don't really need to touch them. Unless you are addressing a specific problem.
