Why do people not have any System Restore points

I've seen quite a few posts here and on other forums where people have had Windows 7 installed for a while yet when they open System Restore, there are no available restore points.

It looks like Windows 7 defaults to System Restore not be active.

Easy answer, they could have it turned off. By default one week is made. If you had your computer for at least a week make sure that you have the required SR points.

Difficult answer, malfunction, erased points,( unintentionally), or formated. If you format the drive with the SR points, they may be deleted.

Default is once a week. Check your task scheduler.

Lots of people believe they don't "need" the "handholding" provided by restore points and they read that they "Slow down the system and create unnecessary" overhead so they turn them off to tweak the most from their machine. Although using them is rare, I find them to be extremely valuable and believe they serve a great purpose. They have always been there for me on my machines.

The default on W7 is for http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/700-system-restore.html to be active by default. Here is what I get on my system when I invoke it.

Don't know the answer. The procedure needs to be simpler for Joe everyday user.

If anyone has just made an install, then they can:
WIN key
type SYSDM.CPL
Enter key
System Protection tab

and then make sure that System Protection is turned on for their System drive.

If anyone has freshly installed, you can do us a favor and verify that system protection is on by default.


Maybe we need to remind them that:
CREATE A RESTORE POINT
START | type Create a Restore | Enter key

RESTORE TO A RESTORE POINT
START | type System Restore | Enter key

I turned System Restore off. Running an SSD and didn't want to eat up valuable space. I use Acronis to back up every 3 to 4 days.

Same here for me Dwarf, I know the first time I looked and only saw a couple of points until I noticed the box that needed ticking to show more, ticked the box and up came the points and plenty of them.

I also run Acronis to do backups to an external drive but I certainly wouldn't turn System Restore off, you never know when you might need to just take a step back without having to go the full image restore route.

I'm continually trying various software and software features out. Creating a restore point beforehand has saved me from having to pull out the external drive and do a complete system image restore.

Before any change - hardware or software, I always create a restore point.

Of course, I do have the advantage of years upon years of experience with computers.

I have daily backups to my Home server, acronis backups once a week and still find that system restore is the quickest to fix minor problems.

The difference with me is that my configuration stays the same most of the time. Obviously, Windows Updates and such, but as far a trying out new software -- not really. That's just me. Besides, restoring the image usually takes all the length of about 7 minutes.

I back up my own files on a separate Jump drive, so if i get a virus i dont mind reformating, i have everything documented.

I always shut it off on XP because I remember when it used to cause MASSIVED fragmentation on XP, so it left a bad taste in my mouth. Plus, I have always preferred the robustness of a 3rd party solution. That being said I use it on all my Win 7 boxen and haven't had any ill effects.

I guess there are lot of Tweaking softwares which gives options to Turn Off System restore people never think the advantages of having it turned on !! They should be made aware by some way

Well, that's one for: "If the shoe fits..."
If System Restore were a necessity, there would be no option to turn it off. For the uninitiated, that is an option they would do well not to touch... I know better and I am fully aware of the repercussions of running in such a way. I only run this way because of the solid state drive in my system.

An image restore is only about 7 minutes... 15GB max...

System Restore takes about that long. Right? Maybe longer?

Just create a system restore point (which is different than a system image).

Now restore using that system restore point.

You will find that restore time is considerably less.
