RIAA/MPAA Still Pushing For Copyright Filters In AV Software

Here are some of the lovely things that they're calling for:

* spyware on your computer that detects and deletes infringing materials;
* mandatory censorware on all Internet connections to interdict transfers of infringing material;
* border searches of personal media players, laptops and thumb-drives;
* international bullying to force other countries to implement the same policies;
* and free copyright enforcement provided by Fed cops and agencies (including the Department of Homeland Security!).

Granted, it's not a defacto right guaranteed by the Constitution but almost everyone in the world would agree that the 21st century will be marked by the choices we make in regards to privacy. Who gets to know what's on your computer? Who gets to see your medical records? Who gets to know if you're gay or straight?

However, were I to say anything, it would be along the lines of perhaps suggesting that they themselves should be subjected to mandatory acts of solitary fornication.... with a rusty nail infused pineapple.

This called pushing the issue. They overreact and then compromises are made. There are LAWS against what they are griping about. But the enforcement is, and they know it, rather dicey. So they say they need this and that to protect law and lawyers make cases and who pays? They do. It's a nice tied up self-nullifying prophecy that I think we should steer clear of.

This is laughable...but here in the UK it would not surprise me if our government agreed because they are all a bunch of crooks who bend over over backwards for big businesses when they start flashing cash and giving away free holidays to our MP's.

In the unlikely event that this did ever happen its easy to get around...have two computers; one for all your data and don't connect it to the net and another empty one used just to browse the web. Simple's

Eventually the RIAA/MPAA are going to figure out why cd sales are dying. If they would pull their heads out of there asses for a minute they would see this is their doing. I am still pissed that they managed to shut down guitar tab sites. As a guitar teacher in my spare time it put a real cramp in teaching. You can still get tabs sure, but according to them teaching and playing someone elses song is copyright infringment. That's how I learned and have taught for years!! I could go on and on but I won't. I agree with Blackrose up there, "Can't the RIAA/MPAA just die already?"

Music and Movie sales are slow right now because the quality is in my opinion at an all time low. Most movies lately are hacked up remakes with washed up or never will be actors and seriously WTF is up with this letterbox crap. I have a 55" TV but most movies lately are letterbox therefore i'm restricted to viewing the movie in 25% of my screen. At least format them in widescreen which fills up most of the screen. Also i've noticed on a lot of new movies I can't even skip the commercials. As far as music albums.. They are at the point of having maybe 1-2 good songs on them. I don't download or buy music/movies anymore because I just can't find any worth it.

I think the biggest killer in sales however is how the RIAA/MPAA are presenting themselves.

i think the problem is (and i am not condoning this line of thought) that as we are all assumed to be guilty of copyright infringment until proven otherwise, people just think "sod it, if their gonna treat me like that, then i may as well just go ahead and actually do it"

See, what's happened here is for the past 40 years we have made them the empires they now dwell. We needed them and the artist needed them for advertisement, distribution etc etc. When the internet was just getting under way all those years ago these very organisations said it's just a fad and will burn out.

Fast forward 20/25 years and we now have the best advertising and distribution network there could be in p2p and torrents.

What's happening here is they want to take control of the whole internet so they can call the shots on everything we do. Instead of actually competing with innovation they are trying to restrict it for their own greedy monopolistic ways and it seems to be paying off just now because their wallets are louder than the outcry. But the outcry will become louder and louder because they are attacking everybody in their quest for money and power.

They are the captains of their own demise.

It's actually quite funny because if you go back in copyright history, not only was Hollywood founded by totally disregarding European copyright law but the whole of the USA was in fact founded by breaching copyright laws.

The sooner copyright gets a complete make over the better for everybody.

Copying is the very essence of how we learn!

I don't find it surprising that a Brit would have a different perspective of history than one born in the USA, but I do admit that I find his statement puzzling. While I do recall taxation being a factor in causing the war, I can't think of a single instance of copyrighting infringement ever being mentioned. Perhaps he would like to enlighten us.
