'Always on top' somehow triggered by ALT key

Hi folks,

This is one of those weird things that's actually followed me around since the Windows 2000 days! I suspect back then the culprit was TweakUI, but since there isn't such a program for Win7 I don't know how it's returned once again.

Basically, if I tap the ALT key on a focused window (any type) it will become 'always on top'. Prior to Win7 it was CTRL that caused it.

Has anyone experienced such behaviour? I've done a ton of tweaking since migrating from XP over the last few months, but cannot narrow down the culprit.

Hello Echo, and welcome to Seven Forums.

It sounds like it is something similar to what the free program PowerMenu allows, but through the context menu. Do you have it or something similar installed?

I don't have a fix for you but I have a small utility I wrote that toggles the topmost attribute of the active window. Scroll down this page and look for Topmost Toggle:

edit: at least it's an easy way to undo it until you find the cause.

Interesting if this is a vanilla Win7 hotkey - I wonder if mine somehow has a sticky shift key!

Alt+Shift can do that.

Maybe not if his system is broken.
Plus it notifies you of the current state when you toggle it.

edit: also if you are a keyboard combo guy you don't like using the mouse. But if you are mouse-oriented like I am, you don't like to take your hand off the mouse just to hit some hotkey. But that's an interesting combo. I never saw it in any hotkey lists. But being a mouser type I didn't look that hard.

Maybe I misread something. I learned that here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alt-Tab

With the initial press of Tab or Shift-Tab, the square selection cursor is placed onto the window immediately following or immediately before the active one. If there are no topmost windows above the active window, an initial Shift-Tab wraps the cursor around to the end of the list.

Tab <=> Shift Tab is control navigation. For instance the next or previous input box in a form etc..

Wow, found it after all this time - Winsize http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Shell_and_Desktop/Desktop_Window_Managers/WinSize.htmlhas hotkeys for toggling always on top windows, and they were both defaulted to ALT alone.

It's an ancient program, but has been reliably pushing my windows to co-ordinates for over a decade
