Torrent search engine Mininova earning €1 million a year
Pirate Bay admins have always claimed they never made much from the site, but Dutch records reveal that another massive BitTorrent search engine made more than €1 million in 2007. Are BitTorrent search engines profiting from piracy? Mininova's founder says no.

By Nate Anderson | Last updated March 11, 2009 8:15 PM CT

One of the key issues in the recent Pirate Bay trial was the prosecutor's contention that the lads behind the site were raking in something like 10 million kronor (one million dollars) a year. This led defendant Gottfried Svartholm Warg to complain during a court recess: "It's totally absurd, those numbers are totally disconnected from reality." And, for good measure, he took a shot at the prosecutor. "The old *******'s crazy," he said.

Whatever the truth of The Pirate Bay's profits, BitTorrent search engines can rake in quite a bit of cash. Mininova, for instance, earned €600,000 in revenue back in 2006, upping this to a whopping €1,000,000 in 2007. Is it profiting from piracy?

Don't know the reason for it and maybe it's just me, but it seems if you do a search for Windows 7, it comes back with no relevant results any more, seems they are being forced to clean up their act. Pirate Bay on the other hand still remains defiant.

They are not profiting from piracy imo. Like the lads here say it's about selling t-shirts etc etc. The industries have only got themselves to blame for this because they refuse to update their business model with technology. They would prefer to keep it as a physical source like the cd/dvd so they can keep the monopoly they have on it. I dont agree for one second that they are profiting from the bulletins they have on their boards. Do they sell copies of vista? Do they sell copies of gta iv? Maybe mirrors edge? I cant have any sympathy with these gangster like organisations that screw us for all it's worth.

Have you ever heard of GOOGLE.

(I don't mean by that remark for you to do a lookup BTW).

GOOGLE is one of the wealthiest corporations in the known (and probably unknown) universe and we certainly aren't charged to use its services.

It makes money on "per click" on sites visited by the searcher (or user).

In any case what's the difference in searching say Windows 7 download on Google or on Mininova or the Pirate Bay or even "The Yellow Pages".

If you prosecute The Pirate Bay you might just as well prosecute Google -- you can search for ANYTHING on google legal or otherwise if you phrase your question sufficiently intelligently.

This is all just a Lawyers fest and you know what I generally think of that totally (or at least 99%) scumbag profession.

Cheers

There's information about this on rlslog.net.....

The owner of the ISOHunt search engine website (used specifically to find Bittorents submitted by users) is fighting the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA) in court against claims that his site pirates music. The company’s president, Gary Fung, wants Canada’s Supreme Court to rule on the legality of search engines being used to identify material which may ultimately be used illegally to determine if they, too, are culpable

Hi there

So I'm likely to get prosecuted for "Terrorism" or some other trumped up charge if I search Google on information about Nuclear Physics / Atomic Bombs etc -- stuff which is in the public domain anyway.

I thought the legal system was to punish the guilty -- when did it change to deciding you were guilty of a crime by just searching for info.

Lawyers again -- maybe its time to call in the "Albanian Fixers" to sort this stuff out and leave everybody well alone.

There's NO CHANCE now - Zilch or whatever of stopping P2P stuff. You might as well try stopping the Earth from rotating in its axis.

OK close the pirate bay down it'll re-emerge under a different guise somewhere else. In any case even fom an environmental point of view downloading is much "Greener" than smelly polluting factories making physical DVD's / CD's with some really nasty chemical processes.

Cheers

Hi there

I remember a time I got hauled in front of Management for doing a search on DEMON. I was doing a contract at BT in Manchester UK at the time.

Of course I was actually looking for the Internet provider Demon Internet - at that time we were looking at the "Backbone" infrastructure of this company. It used - can't remember now but was it COLT or something - providers.

Of course the Bozo management (who being a Telecomms company should have known better) had all sorts of Ideas about me and "Devil" worship.

Pity back in those days perhaps I could have got them on "Racism" charges - they obviously thought I was into some weirid Icelandiic saga or religion.

If we go down this route then god help us all (maybe now another offence - looking at the word GOD - if DEMON is not allowed why should GOD be permitted) -- the Internet whilst its good AND bad the good part more than outweighs the bad part.

Any tampering with it will drastically reduce its usefulness (of course Police and Governments want this).

However the Internet now has reached a tipping point in that it is now truely world wide and essentially "unpoliceable" .

There might be temporary setbacks from time to time but the Internet is likely to outlast any of these dramas being played out in various courtrooms world wide.

Cheers
jimbo

Lots and lots of traffic with adverts and products for sale.

Exactly. To suggest they make money off the torrents is ludicrous in the extreme. how do all these web providing services make money? Exactly the same way as independent t.v companies, they generate revenue through adverts and products for sale. Maybe these gangster like organisations should adopt the same attitude to the digital world instead of forcing it underground more. No matter what it is here to stay!

Not to mention, they are adding together annual income, are they taking into account all the expenses? Think what it costs to keep those servers running bandwidth ect.
