Microsoft has released an updated DirectX package for all versions of Windows. This is a DX9/DX10 update that's not going to show up on the Windows Update website, but is an official release required by all games for functionality.

The DirectX redistributable includes all the latest and previous released DirectX runtime. This includes the bi-monthly D3DX, XInput, and Managed DirectX components and provides the latest DirectX that developers include with newly released and all older Games.

DirectX setup has determined that a newer or equivalent version of DirectX has been installed already. No installation is necessary.

Because not everyone wants to update DirectX....and some people want to use the web installer and some people want to use the redistributable installer....

Why would you not want to be running the latest version of Direct X? And does it really matter whether you're using the redistributable or web installer?

Why not at least offer it in Windows Update, say under the Optional section?

Any specific reason for this? Does the Web installer not do as good a job?

Also, I've noticed the Redistributable version will say it's "searching for components and updating as necessary" and will find something every time I try running the installer, whereas the Web based installer will run once, update what is necessary, and then when ran again will not find anything new to update.

technically you cant remove directx without messing some part of the system...
they might disable directx updates but they cannot remove the base directx with pretty much making the system unstable...

i believe (at least to me) is that if you use and install any of unofficial builds you rather save bandwith and install it locally (i do this all the time..)

The "dxwebsetup.exe" file has been around for ages actually! That's simply a direct link you run by an exe file for seeing DX go on if your just connecting online with a fresh install of XP or want the latest available.

For the older versions you can download and unpack a full redistributable DX package with it's own installer. For XP I keep a separate folder here for just that.

Windows 7 ships with DirectX 11 by default.
Hence the reason the DX9-10 update would not install.

Hit Windows Key +r for the run box
type dxdiag

If you have the DX9c stand alone installer that will run on 7 without a problem. The image here shows how you will want a folder set aside for seeing the files unpacked into.



You can see DX9 installed before you even connect online when first installing Windows.

yes you can install dx9 on win7
dx10 is there already installed in win7 and is not available
as you can see here all these dll's are from dx9 redist install...

and dx10 is already there as you can see here the dll files are there...

With the DX10 or 11 already included you would see 9c installed for older pre Vista games in order to see those run without OpenGL and other types of errors coming up. Even some of the more recent labels are still XP compatible and will include a DX9c installer.

Other "old" older games going back a bit that surprizingly run well on 7 will include a DX7 installer with the install or do not install options seen on those. One thing I was testing on 7 here was backward compatibility for both games and programs and found it improved over what is seen in Vista.

The 7077 build lately turned into a gold mine with the old software for the XP MCE 2005 geared tv tuner card where Vista and the 7000 will easily fail at recording video. While a few remove and reinstall attempts will see the picture and sound work for viewing any signal source the 7077 was the first since XP to actually record a video in one piece not some 11,000 fragments!

Hey sorry for digging this up but it's the only topic I could find that remotely might address my issue.

I did a clean install of Windows 7, and now for some reason almost no games will work.

I've tried Warcraft 3, Starcraft, Call of Duty4, Left 4 Dead, and Plants vs Zombies

Out of all of those, only PvZ and Starcraft work. It's a little weird that the older games work but the others dont.

Usually the error I get is that directx is not installed or has an error or sometimes it just hangs at the loading screen. Running dxdiag tells me that I'm using DirectX 11.

I've tried everything from compatibility switches to running as an admin, but no luck so far.

Are all the games encountering errors before or after installing the DirectX Redist (March 2009) ? Have you installed the update?

Were these games installed through that fresh OS installation, or were they installed in a previous OS and are on another hard drive or partition?

Windows Seven does have DX11, but is backwards compatible with previous versions.

If you have the update installed, it's odd they are still giving you DirectX messages.

What particular files does the error say is causing it? ie Missing D3DX39.dll etc

Sometimes copying the missing .dll from the C:\Windows\System32 folder to the game installation directory can help.

The older games require a direct x version that is compatible in order to avoid the problems like OpenGL errors.
