Confirmed: Office 2010 will come in 32-bit, 64-bit

Last month, a very believable rumor started flying around in regard to Office 2010 shipping in 32-bit and 64-bit versions. Check out ZDNet and Within Windows to see how the conclusion was drawn. Everything pointed to Microsoft finally offering a 64-bit flavor of its Office suite, previous versions of which have only shipped in 32-bit or 16-bit flavors. In an e-mail exchange with Ars today, a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed that Office 2010 will be available in both flavors: "Yes, Office will have two separate 32-bit and 64-bit versions. Office 2010 will be the first to do this."

Will 64-bit Excel 2010 remove more of the artificial limits to the size of a spreadsheet? At least Excel 2007 removed some.

Bye.

Giant spreadsheets? :)
i can see the reason for moving to a 64 office... (at least for me)
the million dollar question would be...
are both 64 and 32 going to be included in the same package?
as many users will (i predict) backlash if it isnt...

Hi all.

Whilst the idea of 64 bit software is great and I'm certainly looking forward to it -- how many of you out there really have problems with EXCEL 2007 in not being able to make a large enough spreadsheet.

Unlike a 64 bit OS which CAN run 32 bit software - making a 64 bit only version of OS would severely reduce Microsoft's income since MS Office is still the world's most popular office suite by far. It will still be many years yet before large corporations have updated all their computers to run the 64 bit version of Windows (and hence a 64 bit version of Office).

I'll wait for the 64 bit version but I can't say this is a piece of "Must Have" software -- unlike a 64 bit version of Photoshop which really IS an improvement over its 32 bit sibling.

The only area where a 64 bit version of Office *might* be currently useful is in the database area (Ms ACCESS) - but if you need databases of that size you are much better off using something like MySQL, or Postgre SQL or even a complete ERP type solution ( Say Oracle or SAP).

Cheers
jimbo

I completely agree that this is just the beginning and it will be some time before x64 has become mainstream. I too thought of an x64 Access being quite useful.

I'll stick with OpenOffice, I'm just too cheap to pay for something that I can basically get for free.

I'll stick with OpenOffice, I'm just too cheap to pay for something that I can basically get for free.

Hi I like Open Office as well but I still find that the "EXCEL CLONE" a bit limiting.

1) No VBA / compatability with EXCEL VBA -- probably not important if you are not a huge user of EXCEL macros / VBA.

2) - The show stopper

-- EXCEL WEB queries. I use these a lot of retrieving data from the WEB and updating automatically such as updating the FTSE 100 stock exchange Index (One of my many vices is that I like a bit of "Spread Betting" -- and you can do this with things like FTSE 100, or Dow etc etc -- careful if you do this -- put decent stop losses on or it could cost you serious money --you can MAKE some as well).

Now if you can suggest a way of retrrieving data from the web and automatically updating with Open Office I'll love to try it.

The rest of OPEN OFFICE is very good indeed - especially for the price - ZERO.

For EXCEL.

In the example i'm showing here I've got a web query to retrieve the "Components" and current market data for the FTSE 100 index. (The components are the companies that make up the FTSE 100 -- known as the "Footsie" or the UK Financial Times stock exchange top 100 index).

The Green arrow specifies that table area you want to import and the import button tells you go ahead and import data.

You then get a prompt telling you what Cell to start importing to -- and just go for it.

Finally in diagram 3 the final result.

It's easy to automate this say for updating every 5 mins or whatever.

Very very useful.

BTW if you are using EXCEL 2003 or EXCEL XP rather than EXCEL 2007 instead of directly getting the WEB data from the menu you have to go to DATA ==> Get external data==>new web query or similar -- I haven't used the 2003 version for a while but web queries work exactly the same way as in EXCEL 2007.

Cheers

jimbo

talking about free

have you heard that they experimenting on a ad-supported on Office 2010?
Microsoft Office: An Advertising Platform - PC World
its as free and legal as you can get with MS office for those that dont have it preinstalled by a OEM...

That's an abomination.

I've got enough probs with adverts when I'm "Googling" etc etc.
I just want to get on with the job unhindered by this sort of Junk..

When I was a youngster ("many many moons ago") we used to think that if you saw a product advertised on TV it really must be in trouble -- TV was (and still is in our community) largely regarded as a very "Low Brow" medium.

We never saw Ferrari's, Rolex watches and other lynchpins of "The Consumer" economy adevertised on TV (and still don't -- although you see ROLEX on all the Wimbledon Tennis scoreboards of course).

I remember on a recent trip to the US watching one channel for about 10 mins in a Hotel Bedroom -- the worst occupation known to man or Beast --watching TV by yourself in a Hotel bedroom. At least I wasn't emptying the minibar.

This channel seemed to be running an incessant stram of commercials with a very short (90 second) break for what seemed like a program and then that nauseous voice again -- we'll be back after some IMPORTANT Messages.

No wonder "Normal" or Live TV apart from Sport is dying the death quicker than a rat on difethialone (illegal BTW in the US but extremely effective).

Can I get something like a pair of "Horse Blinkers" for my monitor to screen out those ads. I'd probably PAY not to see this junk.

Cheers

lol
since i believe it will be like MSN where there is a server that is output these ads..
it should be a simple solution of blocking the ip...
although this is Office not just some little app like msn...
probally it'l start pinging (or try to talk to the site...:sarc:)
and if it returns with a error then all hell would brake loose (in your computer at least..) and tell you that since the server isnt avaible you dont get to play with office...:p
although eventually someone will come up with a workaround remove ads...

and yes i agree if it was text ads ala google then i wouldnt mind hell i id be a proponent for changing the ugly flash/silverlight/java (or any other plugin/activex) based ad system which takes away precious cpu cycles from notebook/netbook users like myself that would make might system have a heart attack (meaning it would start stuttering eating all my CPU cycles) and not let go until i close it (which is why now i employ noscript/adblock/flashblock which stop all wastefull ad code to be initated...)
although it lets google and other text ads in since i believe in the support of ads for those websites that offer free services....:)
