Avira, Microsoft Security Essentials, Kaspersky and avast!

Taking care of your system these days seems to be a less complicated task than it used to be a few years back. Now, protection against malware begins the moment you install your operating system. Windows 7 offers some basic security through Windows Defender and also provides a better solution under the shape of Microsoft Security Essentials, which is free of charge and can be installed on systems passing genuine validation. So, going with Windows 7 may be the winning hand after all.

I think we could have that discussion for ages. The first step to success is a conviction - even often in light of contradicting data and evidence. But at least Eset is #9 in the latest AV comparison.

For me, the free antivirus software software available fill my required needs.

I used to pay for Antivirus software (I have installed trend micro and norten in the past few years) but then i tried MSE which seemed to be better then the paid alternatives.

I then found about Avast 5 (the avast 4.8 interface was one of the worse i have ever seen) which I think is the best antivirus software out there.

Thanks for posting the report. Very useful information. If i'm not mistaken according to the graph of missed samples Avast is the best free anti virus software. Or was there some other free av software that scored higher? Because i then may want to switch

OK guys please stop saying which is best and which is not. We've had 1000's of discussions on these topics in the past. This article just lets you know the "difference" between free and paid AV.

If Avast! 5 can pass my test I will consider switching to it once our Norton subcription runs out. While using Sandboxie, I don't see the need to pay. The only problem is my computer illiterate sister. Norton would suit her far better.

Of course, Common Sense is a necessary addition to any AV.

Layerd security is the only way that insures you are protected.

IOBIT
Malwarebytes
A Squared
Superantispyware

Nothing gets through.

I do use the paid versions of IOBIT, A Squared and Malwarebytes. The extera realtime protection is what helps the most.

Absolutely agree about layered protection -- I really should think of investing in the paid-for version of Malwarebytes; it's a minimal outlay really

You are right. I was confusing with AVG and Avira. Have to read instead of relying on your memory - LOL. But for a free AV program, Avast has a very good score.

"Common Sense" as Jonathan_King pointed out, goes with both free and paid for anti-virus programs.
There isn't one anti-virus program out there, that will ever help your brain
