Ubuntu 10.04 Final

Yes, you can triple-boot 7, Vista, and Ubuntu (with or without Wubi). If you use Wubi, it adds Ubuntu to the Windows Boot Screen.

I've been running it since the release through wubi. OS seems pretty stable. I can not get the effects to take in compiz, but the cube and everything works fine. I am running an ATI 5770 which they say is supported with the flgrx drivers but no help in fourms yet. Alot of new updates come out today so maybe my fix will be in there, one other thing I found I had problems with is the you tube viewer in totem but the bbc worked fine. Guess I am just going to have to play around with it some more.

If you just let Wubi install Ubuntu without running it with the "--32bit" variable, it installed the 64-bit version, which is not as stable or compatible as the 32-bit version. Unlike with Windows, at this point you'll want to stay x86 with Linux.

Is that the general view? That the 64 bit version is not stable?
It's a pity if so, I've been using 64 bit since XP

I'd say that the Ubuntu 10.x x64 is not as stable - but plenty of other distros *are* stable at x64. I would not say *Linux* x64 in general has a problem with x64.

Agreed. We run tons of CentOS 64-bit servers at work and they are stable.

However, for my desktops, I've generally stuck to 32-bit versions. Of course, I've been on Windows 32 bit until Windows 7 too. It's just been easier as most of the web tutorials and such assume 32-bit versions...so if you keep things consistent here, it's often easier to configure new things.

Yes, I should have clarified. For desktop use (Linux), you'll want to stick to 32-bit, but not necessarily for server use. The reason I say this is because a lot of packages just won't work inside a 64-bit environment. I've had personal experience with this, and installing the 32-bit solved my problems.

Hmmn. I'm pretty sold on 64 bit so I might try the x64 in a triple boot and report back if I get problems.
Maybe this latest release will have fixed some of the problems as 64 bit seems to be the way to go and I've found x64 in Windows to be much more stable than x86.
This certainly seemed true with Vista. I installed x64 Vista as soon as it came out and friends installed the 32 bit version.
They seemed to have very bad experiences, especially at first, but mine was plain sailing all the way
I was also looking at Linux Mint but I think it is basically Ubuntu in a different outfit so the latest release will be based on the previous Ubuntu release I think.

I'll give it some thought:geek:

I haven't really found much difference. I have a desktop at work and at home on 64-bit Windows 7...and my work laptop is on Windows 7 32-bit and they are all stable. I cannot move my laptop to 64-bit...as our CheckPoint VPN client will not work and allow me to connect remotely...which somewhat defeats the entire point of the laptop.

I was also looking at Linux Mint but I think it is basically Ubuntu in a different outfit so the latest release will be based on the previous Ubuntu release I think.
Mint is just a re-spin of Ubuntu which the multimedia codecs installed by default.

My 32-bit Ubuntu running on a test box with 8GB of RAM installed with the PAE kernel and shows all 8GB of RAM

What I was trying to say is 64-bit Windows is not the same as 64-bit Ubuntu. It works for Windows, and I use it and love it, but for Linux it's a compatibility nightmare.

One of the nice things that most *IX did is 64bit and that was the norm in many cases. People would pick a *IX because there is so much support for (x64). Windows always seemed to lack in that area, all be it there is Windows XP (x64) but the OS never really took off. Why, mostly because of drivers if they were not built into the OS you really did not have much of a chance to make it work. I have run Windows XP (x64) for years on some production machines and for what they were doing it worked great. Microsoft tried to get users into x64 when Vista was released but Microsoft had bigger issues because the whole new way drivers worked meant that every vendor had to re-write their drivers. Since there were driver issues in (x86) there was no chance to push users to (x64). Along comes Windows 7 and most pre-loads are (x64) so many people believe this is the first (x64) Windows, when we all know it is not. Now that users are actually using (x64) it is putting pressure on the *IX community to do (x64) better. The issues in *IX (x64) are now more apparent because you have a (x64) Windows to compare it to. Now that Windows can do things a *IX (x64) cannot do we start to feel like *IX is broken. I am sure the *IX community will resolve all the (x64) issues as time goes on.

Have just managed to get this loaded on my main machine, using Wubi - looks quite impressive - one word of warning to a possible issue.

Make sure you disconnect any empty USB drives (basically card readers) or you will get errors stating that drive errors are present from WUBI.

If you cannot disconnect, (built in drives), ensure that the "display empty drives" option is switched off in explorer.

As a last resort you will need to select continue in the dialogue several times for each unrecognized drive.

Now to try and get my mobile broadband dongle to work - at least it sees it in 10.04

Yes I got that Nigel. I've put Wubi on my bedroom computer and I think it's x64.
I kept getting the "no disk in drive" error so I just kept clicking "try again" and it worked in the end.
It must check every drive before installing.
I've got internet connectivity straight away and have FF and Chrome on it.
Haven't really had a chance to play with it yet but it looks nice.

Two noob questions:

How do I work the compiz cube thing?
Can I network in my windows home group and play media from my main W7 install in Ubuntu?

Thanks in advance, John:)

Glad it helped john

The compiz Cube is not as far as I know installed by default - checkout the software manager under themes and see if you can add it from there.

As for the networking - I believe you will have to share the folders you want to share via the old networking method - but they should then be available to you in Ubuntu

Still no update on any distro for soundcards. I complain about this alot and it is one of my main complaints, I have an Emu-0404 PCI and it just doesn't work with linux. ALSA keeps saying it is supported but it is not.
After many hours spend, my EMU 0404 work fine.

In order to make it work :
- install ubuntu 10.04 (mine is 64 bits)
- go to emu0404 - Documentation Ubuntu Francophone (sorry, french doc) and copy/paste the first script in an executable file (chmod +x)
- launch the script, and when it asks the version of alsa you have, specify 1.0.23. It will install the latest version of alsa drivers, that seem to be ok with EMU 0404 (even if 1.0.15 is supposed to work fine with EMU0404). Rem: don't ask the script to apply the EMU patch.

After that and a reboot, your soundcard will be detected as :
> lspci | grep SB
Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB0400 Audigy2 Value
> cat /proc/asound/modules
0 snd_emu10k

Hope this will help ...

I put the script into an empty file and ran it in terminal, however it is still in french. I know very little french and had no clue what is was saying in the terminal. I tried to translate the script through word and Bing and redo it but the translation kills something in the script. Oh well still no love on emu 0404 on the English side. Thanks for trying to help.

How do I work the compiz cube thing?
First, you will have to ensure that a 3d accelerated video driver is installed. You can check what is available by going to System, Administration, Hardware Drivers.

Second, turn on the desktop effects: System Preferences, Appearance, click on Visual Effects tab. Turn on either Normal or Extra.

Third. You need to install the extra eye candy components of compiz
sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager
Then make adjustments from System, Preferences, CompizConfig Settings Manager.

To spin the cube, by default, hold down CTRL-ALT and then click on the left mouse button and then move the mouse to spin the cube.

This release is certainly a great advance over the last one I tried 8.04 IIRC have tried each one since but found that there was always a deal breaker. (wireless or in one case bad support for my graphics).

This time I have even got the system on-line via my mobile broadband USB stick (about 4 hours altogether :( mostly research into some minor annoyances) a definite improvement over previous.

Not sure it's ready for the general user yet but it's getting there :)

Yeah I check in on them from time to time and am suprised by the advances they make. I figure in the next couple years it will be a great OS. They do need to work out the install and anoyance time. When ever I do a fresh install I count on about 3 to 4 hours to get things working right. That is just to long for the average user though.

Last install I did of fedora on my lappy went real fast and my wireless was up in running out of the box. I spent maybe an hour from start to finish. Alot of that was getting DVD playback, Flash and MP3 playback.
