Oldest "Dinosaur" Running Win7

i've got it running on 128mb. However, on that PC, the CPU is overclocked to 5ghz. WEI:3.1. And it has a 16mb video card! MS should post minimum system requirements on their site.

I might be able to beat this.. I just need to run to the storage unit and fetch the system.

I have an HP Vectra P200 (non-MMX) with 384MB of RAM and a 40GB Hard Drive.

Should I take a stab at it?

At my moms house, i have a gateway built back in 99 or 2000, running win95, with 5gb HDD, 128mb ram, the graphics card is some generic card that was 'standard' in them machines, no cd-rom drive but it has a 3.5 floppy drive. I think it has a pentium or pentium II with 90MhZ and the monitor is huge and bulky lol sad part is, it still runs like it did when we first got it.. LIKE JUNK!!! fresh out the box, it had maybe 500mb to 1gb free on it. Thats without putting anyhting on it, just hooking it up. After aol installed, it was down to 100mb free and if you tried getting online, it crashed.

I swear gateway pulled a bag of dog doo doo out of their neighbors trash and sold it as a top of the line machine.

It was supposed to be top of the line, with win 98 or ME. With dual cd drives, one for burning and one for dvd watching, a pentium 3 processor with Nvidia graphic card, NO 3.5 floppy, 1gbram, with the open availibily slot to get more ram sticks 80GB HDD. But they sent my mom junk and told her that it was top of the line.

I got Win7 installed:

P3 450MHz, 384MB RAM (64+64+128+128), 15GB Hard Drive, 4MB AGP Card, but the video looked worse than 4 bit.

I will not place a better video card in this machine. In fact I have about 10 similarly spec'd machines that I would have loved to put Win7 on, but since I do not have good video cards, I'll have to keep them with XP.

Its too bad, the install time was just about 1 hour (could clone the HD after), startup time is acceptable, and the OS itself runs smoother than XP.

Windows 7 Ultimate is running quite well on my mom's PC.

It is an old Dell Dimension 4500S, shipped as:

Dell i845G motherboard
Celeron (Northwood) 1.7GHz
128MB PC2100
Intel Extreme Graphics

Following the addition of a 1GB stick of PC3200, Windows 7 was installed and functional on it with all eye candy disabled.

The system has been largely overhauled now.

Dell i845G motherboard
Pentium 4 (Northwood) 3.06GHz
2GB PC2100
nVidia Geforce FX5200

The FX5200 is, for all practical purposes, the best GPU this system can ever support. The motherboard or BIOS has some strange issue with cards that use a PCI-E to AGP/PCI bridge, so I can't just dump a cheap PCI card into it. nVidia's Geforce FX cards were always quite terrible at DX9 performance, and Aero is no exception. At 1920x1080, transparency must be disabled for the OS to perform smoothly. At lower resolutions, the FX5200 would be fine; 1080p is just a bit too much for an ancient low-end card, though.

Hello.

For testing purpose, I installed Windows 7 on that computer :

  • Celeron processor clocked at 700 MHz, socket 370
  • 512 MB of RAM (SDRAM 100 MHz)
  • integrated graphic chipset (32 MB from the RAM)
  • 8 GB Hard Disk (PATA Seagate 5400 rpm)
  • CD driver (not compatible with DVD)
  • gigabyte motherboard with Intel 810 chipset

Not the oldest PC with Windows 7 of course, but it's still well below the official system requirements.

1493908285.png

Due to the limitations of graphic card (limited to DirectX 6), I obviously cannot enjoy Aero Glass, but it's not compulsory to use Windows 7.

The hardware compatibility is pretty good : only the graphic card and sound card weren't natively recognized (resolution limited at 640x480 and no sound) but the problem was quickly resolved : I just installed old graphic driver from Intel website and sound driver from Windows Update to make everything work.

To make a real test, I often used this computer during the last three months (opera and office are installed too). It's really slow but usable for browsing if you are patient (just make sure that flash player is disabled).

Finally, here more details about WEI (The HD WEI is surprisingly high, but the rest is virtually at the minimum level)
