Microsoft pushes users to ditch XP with IE9 plans, says analyst

Opportunity for rivals, especially Firefox, to gain users; Chrome need not apply

Microsoft's decision to abandon Windows XP with its next browser is a business move meant to push people off the aged operating system, an analyst said today.

It also gives rivals like Mozilla an opportunity to make further inroads into Internet Explorer's market share, said Sheri McLeish of Forrester Research. "XP is in that same world as Office 2003 and IE6," said McLeish. "Microsoft doesn't want to prolong the life of those products."

McLeish was reacting to Microsoft's stated plans not to support its next-generation browser, Internet Explorer 9 (IE9), in Windows XP. Google, which creates Chrome, criticized that decision yesterday during a panel discussion at Web 2.0 on the future of browsers.

"It's not in [Microsoft's] interest to support XP," McLeish added. "They have a vision of moving people ahead on operating systems. That's their business intent."

Can't say I will ditch XP just because I can't get IE9. Firefox will support me just fine

Its no big suprise, as they have pulled support for XP there is no reason for them to support XP with IE9,

I can see alot of people getting peeved by this, but why not? its now 10 years old, with 2 successors, by that logic they should release it for Windows 98-ME as well

Oh Well...I still got two XP... one 10 years old and another one just 4 years old. They do both working fine with IE 8, so why should i bother IE 9 on an XP!!
Everything grows up, as just my Win 7 will fit perfect IE 9.

I actually read this article on a friend's XP, which was running FireFox. Oh, the irony.

XP was a great OS at it's time, (5 years ago)

Like other posters, I am glad it is losing support for IE9, There no reason to have support on IE9..(I don't think XP will run it anyway.. hardware acceleration or API is unavailable to XP machines)

It is probably a combination of marketing considerations and cost considerations. It costs a lot of additional money to support additional platforms. But in the case of XP, there is no return for MS - so why should they bother.

I read this on my moms XP using firefox. Even when they do bring out ie9 for 7 only.. then oh well, most people don't even use IE as it is.. so why even bother? 85% of people id say use firefox now, 10% use IE, 3% might use chrome and the final 2% use some other browser, some slimline browser or something. New browser that my brother has.. says its the best.. but it was nothing but problems when i tried using it at his house on his machine. So MS thinks just because they make ie9 for wds 7 users only that they are going to get more people using ie? highly doubt it. I enjoy my firefox and have used chrome a couple times. my laptop has ie7 or 8 on it, can't remember which because.. it.... is.... useless....

Current Browser Market Shares and Trends

If you add up IE 6,7, and 8....IE is still winning in the browser race. Combine that with Windows XP's over 50% of the market....and you see the situation MS has caused

I actually see this as a real blow to XP....and before you decide to respond to this remember that this forum is full of "uncommon users"....common users will upgrade the OS just to have the most current browser they use
