homegroup write privileges denied, w7 x 7

I have two windows 7/64 PCs (Home premium) with a homegroup established - can access files either way, but cannot update them. I have tried this with Norton firewall on and off.

I have tried with various file types but all access to save or save-as are denied.
How do I fix this? I thought that Homegroups were supposed to make things easier?

I have attached a screenshot showing the share privileges - can anyone advise on how to overcome this irritation, please?

Be patient. Not all of us are experts with networking.

You might try going through this Homegroup walkthough which covers most of the problems with Homegroup sharing. Pay particular attention to the time/date info and also the registry adjustment part.

Norton can also easily cause these types of problems.

Thank you for your interest in this problem. Unfortunately none of these suggestions did the trick.

The cause of the problem was in fact Norton 360 - it was not enough to turn off the firewall, or disable via msconfig. One has to uninstall Norton, and set-up the Homegroup anew. All is then fine.

I have found that McAfee is okay with Homegroups as is AVG, but Norton (once again) lets the side down even though it says it is Windows 7 compatible.

I am glad you found the problem. However, McAfee is just as big of a problem causer as Norton. You may find that it causes problems in other areas.

Norton as mentioned before will cause these types of problems all day long, as will just about every A/V or third party firewall in existance.

Yes I'm well aware that you will need to uninstall it completely from your system. It's the nature of the beast.

Of course we are always grateful for any interest shown by others who indeed are trying to assist. So thank you.

Your point about "Norton can also easily cause these types of problems" was possibly too general as traditionally we all know that Norton is a horrible piece of software. I would suggest that we need to be more specific - we had already tried (i) adjusting the Norton firewall - trusted parameters, (ii) disabling Norton vis MSconfig - neither which worked. It was only a full uninstall and deleting and setting up the homegroup again did the problem get resolved. It should therefore be noted that Norton is currently incompatible with Windows 7 homegroups and therefore in giving advice we should be stronger and say that Norton must be uninstalled before Homegroups will work.

I did read elsewhere that someone found this to be the case, but then re-installed Norton after setting up the homegroup, and the problem did not re-occur. But I wasn't prepared to go down the last step.

My client now has McAfee on one PC and AVG on the other - without issues ( I would also agree with a comment about McAfee is also prone to issues, but in this case it is not to blame). personally I would also suggest having the same Security on both PCs but I am in the hands of my client - nuff said.

What is simple file sharing and how to turn it off

I do this too and do this on Windows XP if you have it.. they said simple file sharing causes alot of problems as well.

I run NIS 2010 on all my systems and my Workgroup and Homegroup work without a flaw.
