Solved Slow Network Access and Unable To Transfer Large Files

This is really beginning to frustrate me. Anytime I try to copy a file from my windows xp desktop to my windows 7 laptop, the download speed will decrease until it finally pops up with a message saying, "the connection to \\computer name has been lost, please check the network and try again. This only occurs when trying to copy over large files. The problem does not exist on my windows xp desktop, I am able to copy over large files from the windows laptop without any sort of problem. I have tried connecting the laptop directly to the router but that doesn't fix anything. Please help! Maybe I could try installing a wireless card in the desktop and put the two computers in ad-hoc mode?

The laptop is a dell 1440 Inspiron and the router is a Belkin wrtg54g.

Are y ou using "homegroup" for networking? Sometimes on some mixed OS networks homegroup has a problem with connectivity and slow downs.

You can verify if it is the problem by making a new network connection using "workgroup" and see if the problem still exists. If it does not you can disable IPv6 and kill homegroup.

After spending about 5 days trying to resolve this problem, I finally figured out what was causing the trouble. When joining my Workgroup on windows 7, my Wireless Belkin F5D7234-4 Router was detected and needed to be configured (Which I find pleasing that you can do via the OS itself, rather than spending time stumbling around the routers actual admin page). Instead, I chose to skip the step and continue using my wireless connection without setting it up. Well, I was bored tonight and figured I would finally get rid of the constant notifications, so I went ahead and set up the router, enabled security, etc, and just out of curiosity, I decided that I would try to transfer a file and see if setting up the router could have solved my problem, and IT DID! No more dropped connections from remote pcs and best of all, I am actually able to import my games from my other pc without lugging around an external drive (And yes I know there are other smaller alternatives). Anyhow, thanks for the assistance.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for letting us know the solution. I'm always jumping ahead and I've been there myself.

If you ever needed a temporarily solution for the above issue, you could try to connect the PC's via IPADDRESS (and you may have done this already, if so the below may help other readers ).

If you connect to another computer via its PC name you rely on the router or other DNS device to translate this name into an ipaddress. If you skip this step, it's faster and it rules out DNS as a connectivity issue. DNS issues are a common problem that cause the connection to drop little packets of data (which in turn slow down transfers).

To find a computers IPADDRESS, open CMD (from Search) and type IPCONFIG.

Nice Mike! You're steps ahead and have already ruled out DNS as your issue

I'm curious as to exactly which router setting fixed the problem because this problem has come up quite a few times so far with no clear resolution.

Yeah me too, now that you mention it and I'm also curious if at any time you input static IP, DNS, and DG on the 2 PC's Mike?

Ah, I have got the same problem, thanks for directing me to this thread chev.

And yes, can you please elaborate on the fix? I have also got a Belkin router and a new Windows 7 Netbook. Guess the problem is with Windows 7s compatibility then.

I have just played around a bit more, and found that if I try to transfer the >300mb file from the machine I am transferring to, then it works. I.e. It works one way, but not the other.

That may be a security issue with the router itself or a permissions setting in Windows 7.
