How to remove lock icon from folders?

nah, i messed with my harddrive settings, can someone tell me if these will be fine?

all the "group or usernames" have full access to everything except special permissions.

the "change child permissions" box is unchecked.

i dont have a HomeUserGroup thingy, so i tihnk ill be fine. but im just makin sure

After much tweaking and trying different stuff, i give up. Im the sole user of my computer, i never changed anything when i installed windows 7, and i still have those infamous locks in many files although i can use them all perfectly.
Yes, they are annoying mostly because they shouldnt be there and they are ugly, but finally i agree with some comments here and i decided to leave the issue alone.
Perhaps they will release a service pack in which they can make easy the removal of the locks when they shouldnt be there, but until then i think its not a big a deal, and everyone should leave them in case they do some damage trying to fix it.

MAGO55, Don't give up! I admit to not reading the entire 5 pages of posts because it 12:30 am here and I'm about to head off to bed.

1. Open an elevated CMD prompt and navigate to the directory in question (CD "C:\DIRECTORY IN\QUESTION")
and type in the following (see pic)
takeown /F . /R /A /D Y > NUL [now press ENTER]
icacls . /grant USEROI)(CI)(F) /L /T /Q [and ENTER again]

2. Is the issue the entire drive or just a few files (I have a batch file I wrote to fix the entire drive issue)

3. See the attached the takeown script, install this reg patch (in the Zip) and then right click on the file and take ownership.

That is exactly what I am trying to understand.

Just cause there is a lock on an icon,, if you can access it then great, why try and fix something that ain't broken.

Too much hoopla being made in my opinion.

Your not being logical, logicearth! Its 'so bad' because I can't rename or move any folder that has or contains a folder that has been 'padlocked'.

The only folders that appeared on my system as 'padlocked' were the ones I've added to the WMC libraries. Even after removing them from WMC they still remained padlocked.

The solution that worked for me was to 'Include inherited permissions' and 'Replace all child object permissions', then after applying this, removed the non-inherited permissions as has already been described. However I still could not rename the folder until after a reboot.

I purposely left one sub-folder in the WMC library before doing this to see what would happen to it, and it's contents still played fine after doing the above. When checking in Explorer, this sub-folder is now the only one still with a padlock.

NB - After reading some of the earlier posts: Do NOT do this on your entire C Drive, Windows folder, Program Files folder or any other system folder -screwing up permissions is a sure-fire way to a restore / re-install!!

Finally, someone else who actually gets it.

Yes, Takeown is a good, powerfull, proper tool for some situations. But not all, and definitely NOT on the entire hard drive.

Used for when you actually can't access the files cause you are getting "Access Denied" errors on files you know you should personally own.

it's more simple than that.. don't play with folders restrictions..
just go to the folder properties at sharing tab, click advanced sharing and unmark "Share this folder", then click apply...
that's all.. so.. properties/sharing/advanced sharing/share this folder

Microsoft screwed the pooch

I've been working with a Win 7 box ever since I got our Technet test copy nearly 6 months ago, and was really impressed with the O/S until I began to delve into the folder security and permissions.
I've been messing around with folder permissions for years; WinNT, Win2k, WInXP, (avoided Vista like the plague), but I CANNOT figure this Win 7 schema out.
I might as well be using a MAC!!

If I try to 'save as' a picture (attached to an email), the dialogue box that opens up only shows 'my pictures' folders (and shortcuts), both of which are locked and will not allow me to save to them. I have to create a separate folder somewhere else and browse to it to save my file.

My installation was started from a BLANK drive; a clean install of Win 7 Ultimate, yet I have all these locked folders that I can't get into as a user (who is a member of administrators).


I've been reading all these posts, and find that even the so called Win 7 'gurus' are really stumped by these issues.
Seriously considering a re-install to Win XP and telling M/S to shove it on Win 7!!

I think you have found the magic "Junction Points" on Win 7. To save a lot of typing have a look at this thread. Putting "Junction Points" in the search box will reveal much more!

Yeah, there's a reason MS had never used junctions in publicly visible areas in their desktop OSes before. They are confusing as hell to 99.999% of users.

They made a really hard descision to try to fix the Documents and Settings issue. I /think/ they did the right thing for the long term, but this transition period where there are multiple paths to the /users folder to maintain backwards compatibility with older (broken) apps is a support nightmare
