Hi,

My system has been repeatedly failing to boot since early this morning. The computer lights up and fans and electrics work (CD drive opens). But the Acer monitor registers "No signal" and not even the screen for the board registers, before getting to the Windows part.

Just once though, I got a BSOD on wh. I glimpsed ""The device driver got stuck in an infinite loop".

Now and then the system does boot, but later doesn't.

I googled the above, & so came to change my ATI Radeon X1800 driver to the latestLegacy (or Catalyst) driver from ATI, wh. made the system start twice, but since, it's back to its bad ways.

Here are my latest details:

Problem Event Name: BlueScreen

Definitely looks like your video drivers. Uninstall the Catalyst suite, and install only the driver.

Also, update these old drivers:

THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER_M (100000ea)
The device driver is spinning in an infinite loop, most likely waiting for
hardware to become idle. This usually indicates problem with the hardware
itself or with the device driver programming the hardware incorrectly.
If the kernel debugger is connected and running when watchdog detects a
timeout condition then DbgBreakPoint() will be called instead of KeBugCheckEx()
and detailed message including bugcheck arguments will be printed to the
debugger. This way we can identify an offending thread, set breakpoints in it,
and hit go to return to the spinning code to debug it further. Because
KeBugCheckEx() is not called the .bugcheck directive will not return bugcheck
information in this case. The arguments are already printed out to the kernel
debugger. You can also retrieve them from a global variable via
"dd watchdog!g_WdBugCheckData l5" (use dq on NT64).
On MP machines it is possible to hit a timeout when the spinning thread is
interrupted by hardware interrupt and ISR or DPC routine is running at the time
of the bugcheck (this is because the timeout's work item can be delivered and
handled on the second CPU and the same time). If this is the case you will have
to look deeper at the offending thread's stack (e.g. using dds) to determine
spinning code which caused the timeout to occur.
Arguments:
Arg1: 87049980, Pointer to a stuck thread object. Do .thread then kb on it to find
    the hung location.
Arg2: 00000000, Pointer to a DEFERRED_WATCHDOG object.
Arg3: 00000000, Pointer to offending driver name.
Arg4: 00000000, Number of times "intercepted" bugcheck 0xEA was hit (see notes).

I've tried to zip the latest minidump file, and upload it here [been having probs with this, so I hope it works]

Many thanks for any help

Hi and welcome

this one was probably caused by your video driver. I would completely remove all trace of the current driver and download and install a fresh copy.

Let us know if you need help with any of this

Ken

Wow -AMAZINGLY fast Jonathan/zigzag. Many thx. One thing I did wrong was install the smaller ATI WDM integrated driver. [There's a choice of 2 progs on site]. So I've now installed the larger main one - & had no choice but to also install ATI Catalyst Install Manager. [My uninstall prog. says I can uninstall that though - should I?]

Computer started again fine [but it also did that with 1st driver - so I may be back!]

Had probs locating 3 other drivers:

nvm62x32.sys - Device Manager says is up-to-date

other 2 just hard to google replacements -

should I persist?

Many thanks again.

Persist you want every driver to have a date of july 13, 2009 or newer. That is the day win 7 was pressed

Er still having some probs! Started several times fine last night, then once didn't, & afterwards did. This morning, didn't start three times in succession, then did.

ANy ideas? According to Driver Checker, two of other drivers now updated. SoundMax Aud** driver is actually newer than the one Driver Checker d/l. There's a 4th you didn't note - NVidiia nforce PCI system - Driver C d/l one for this - "TurboVSetup" I think - but it wouldn't work on system.

Any ideas what i should do/check? There are no more minidump files.

Many thanks again.

Yes, uninstall the Catalyst suite. I have seen it cause problems before. Install only the driver.

You may need to do it in Safe Mode if you can't boot up.

Arguments:
Arg1: 87128d48, Pointer to a stuck thread object.

Download a copy of Ubuntu and burn the ISO to a CD using ISO Recorder or the built-in Windows Image Burning utility: Download Ubuntu | Ubuntu

Boot from the CD, and select "Try Ubuntu without any changes to my computer". Play around for a little while. See if you can get it to crash. If it does crash, I'm going to guess the card itself is fried. If it doesn't crash, let's hope it's a driver issue, and continue playing around with different drivers.

booted from Ubuntu CD - but v. confused - no "Try -- without changes"... I started but then aborted installation before it got to partitioning drive - lots of alternatives there but no "...without changes" - wh. one should I try?

Lots of trouble restarting again - several goes/mins - looks like you may be right re graphics card. Any way to know? If I should get new one, any idea which is compatible?

The second card should be compatible with your system.

Thx - if that'll work, that seems easiest. Just double-checking - there is still an Nvidia Nforce PCI System Management driver listed for update by Driver Checker - wh. I d/l and didn't install - it lists 3 drivers - Away Mode & Ethernet & Storage Drivers. Is it worth trying that?

Or will a new card automatically clear up all these probs?

Hopefully the new card will clear up the problems. We can't really tell anything for sure. :(

Sure, go ahead and update the drivers. It won't hurt anything. I also don't think it will help your problem, but you never know.
