Hi guys and "Old Timers"

Running the Hercules emulator I'm running an old IBM mainframe MVS 370 OS with an operators console and a TSO terminal session (who remembers those) on Windows 7 x-64 -- a true mix of Old and New.

Beat THIS guys

BTW even a humble laptop beats the old Water cooled IBM mainframes that we had in those days for sheer processing power.

(Perhaps someone has TOO much time on their hands).

My UK colleagues were all off watching "The Budget" or some UK govt finance thing on TV --doesn't effect me -- so I had to amuse myself somehow.

Going off to the Pub a bit later to watch Chelsea screw up and hand the championship (footie) to Man Utd.

I had to maintain an out-of-production emulator on an old version of Solaris (the emulator didn't support newer versions) to support an even further out of production photo lab production controller that used to run on a Bull mainframe I never saw...

This company was the largest consumer of photographic paper in the world.

Now That's a REAL programming Language . (IBM BAL - Basic Assembly Language).

(picture From Rob's RPF site -- I've seen that function but I've actually got the "Real ISPF/PDF" running on the emulator. RPF was pretty good for this however.

Amazing to think what you could do on those machines even
though until later on in it's life (ESA and os/Z) you only had 16 bit addressing.

Actually using this emulator with MVS38J etc should be a mandatory course in designing OS'es.

MVS was a classic SECURE OS and it's all STILL in the public domain with a lot source code available as well. The OS design still contains most elements required in a SECURE multi-user Operating Sysytem.

I can just imagine a lot of people used to "Twitter" and having short attention spans generally attempting to do what was then called a "Complete System Generation" on this OS or apply fixes to it using the IBM modification program SMP (System modification program) which WAS a dog to get right.

Back in the (very) early days of the IBM 360, a good friend of mine worked for the IT department at UNC (University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill). The new system installation was going badly and IBM's technicians were practically living at the university's computer facility. At some point, everything finally seemed to be going smoothly and the boys in white shirts headed out.

Naturally, the moment they were out of earshot, something caused the sytem to get locked in a loop, refusing to respond to any command the systems operator issued at the control console. Finally, out of sheer frustration, he typed, "god damn it, go to hell."

The console screen responded, "god not verified," and the entire system immediately shut down, refusing to restart.

Saw your "Nikon Geek" -- so take it a "Shooter" as well. I use some Canon gear and was going to have the label - not with Vatican approval of course -"Canonized"

Works for me. I've shot just about everything that's ever been in 35mm format at one time or another; however, my primary cameras in that format have always been Nikon and Leica since the late '60's. I've also shot Hassie, Linhof & Rollei 2-1/4's and Graflix & Linhof 4x5. I haven't touched film in about five years now. I kind of miss it.
