laptop turns off at 50% battery life !!! :s

i have MOBII laptop (NVIDIA product, point-of-view)... its intel atom inside, it was initially with Vista OS, i installed later on WIN-7 (it performed better) but now, after 4monthes, the LAPTOP TURNS OFF at 50% battey life !!! ...
my question is , Bettary's life is over ??? or may it be software related ??? !!

Did you have this problem immediately after installing W7, or just recently?

You might double check in your advanced power plan settings under the Battery option to see if it may have been set to shutdown the computer when the battery level reaches that level, and make any changed as needed.

Same thing happened with my laptop. Right after Win 7 beta install it would trickle down to about 60% then quickly flatline.

Plug it in and it shows 5% life/charging.


I was hoping the RC and various chipset updates along the way would fix it but no joy. Running the battery down, etc doesn't change it.

I prefer NOT to install XP simply to see what happens lol.

The laptop was on Vista before and battery life was fine.

Something else it does is that upon wakeup (not reboot) it will not engage the CPU fan unless I manually change the power state, such as Power-Save to Balanced. And it doesn't matter which one it is just that it has to be changed.

You got a bad battery, or the environmental conditions caused it to speed up its life. Long prolong periods of heat can do that along with other environmental factors. Even the manufacturing process can determine its age. Also letting a battery reach absolute zero can also cause permanent damage.

Installing Windows 7 would not have damage a battery in any such way.

It is your hardware. If there are false readings it is the hardware and supporting software that communicates and translate with the hardware. A bettery is a read-only device if it says it has 5% left, it has 5% left the OS cannot change that.

Windows 7 uses Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) if the underlining hardware does not support this standard to to spec, is that Window's fault? No. If you believe your battery is fine, then you need to talk to the manufacture of your computer. Either they need to provide a BIOS update or a driver.

I am typing this on a laptop, which has had zero battery issues since installing Win 7 since beta. As well as on a Netbook I got at the end of 2009.

NO this in most cases is NOT a cause done by your computer, there are THOUSANDS of ppl having the same problem with their laptop AFTER installing. doing my research online I've seen some saying that after installing windows seven installing back to a different OS will not fix the problem windows does something to the battery life for some reason YES this is most likely a battery problem there aren't any cures as of now but I'm not too sure but 50 percent is a new one if you search the phrase "battery life becomes crappy after installing windows" and you will see alot of results well I didn't search that exact phrase but theres alot of that on google if you type the right words so basically ALOT of ppl are having this problem some say it's not windows' fault some say it's a BIOS setting problem we say Windows 7 either needs more fuel thats why it's draining battery like its its job OR it corrupts batteries whats the cause we may find out but a cure would be getting a laptop that already had windows 7. good luck mate

Ultimately, if you have Windows saying the battery is 50% charged and then all of the sudden dies, the problem is the system hardware somewhere misreporting the battery life (Windows 7 queries battery life slightly different than previous versions of Windows). Usually when this happens, people report that they do indeed have to plug the laptop back in to get it to boot reliably - if that is the case, then yes, the problem is that your BIOS or firmware needs to be updated to report battery life more accurately, or the battery itself does actually need replacing.

A battery is a self-inclosed system, there are special circuits that govern these batteries used in laptops. Windows along with any other system out there, only ever has readonly access to these batteries. Windows cannot "corrupt" as you put it these batteries. What do you mean by corrupt? Nor can Windows make the battery push out more electricity then it is designed for. Those special circuits I mentioned before prevent that from happening.

No, the problem is not Windows the problem is the hardware. If people stop all this foolishness and talked with there manufacture of there computer they will get the solution to there problem. Instead of this stupid witch hunt for a phantom problem in Windows.

I have exactly the same fault with the same laptop. This morning it shut down at 78%. It is running XP so it is unlikely to be Windows 7 related. The next problem is trying to source a battery for this model. Checked lots of websites but no one appears to list this computer
