Huawei 169 USB 3g modem

Hi,

I can't get my Huawei 169 modem to function in Windows 7, I've tried both build 6801 and 6956 -same result

As soon as I plug the modem in Win7 recognizes it as a usb disk, I can access the disk and launch the on board installer. I've downloaded the latest driver from the Huawei site, but the installer fails with the error "can't find any modem"

If I do a hardware scan in the device manager only the usb disk turns up, but not the modem.

I'm using this modem on this laptop in both WinXP and OSX without any problems, so the modem and PC is allright...

Is there any special windows 7 services that I need to start?

have you checked your device manager if there are any unknown devices
can you also prt screen your device manager...

Hi,

no, there's no unknown devices or exclamations in my device manager (one of the first things I checked earlier ) Don't know why you want a screen dump of my device manager as it doesn't tell anything.... Even if I do a "hardware scan" from within the device manager the modem doesn't show up, it's like if windows doesn't sense it at all. Funny...

As I've said before, I know the PC and the modem is OK as it all works if I boot up to XP or OSX. Perhaps MS left out some functionality in the pre-betas :huh:

I found some new vista drivers at the Huawei support site, but that setup fails with the message "can't find the device" (or similar). I've tried to run it in compatibility mode and in admin mode - but it still fails to initialize my modem...

if you a vista OS cd or already have it installed

when you install vista install the driver and back that one up...
then restore it in vista

Its a USB device:

As such it will not show up in device manager. Attach the device and look in Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Devices and Printers to see if the device appears there. You can then run the UTPS11.030.01.04.03.B409.exe you downloaded from the Huawei site as administrator by right clicking it and selecting "Run as Administrator". That should allow the installation wizard to find the USB device when it searches for it. Since it also has a microSD slot it will have to be installed by Windows as a composite USB device first and then as a communications controller and mass storage controller and whatever else it does. Let me know how this works out for you.

what i meant is to install it first (get it working) and keep it there then run drivermax it should show up then back only that driver...

That oughta work if the installer borks in 7. As long as it can find the composite root driver the rest should be easy...

yes you are right since the driver for the micro sd slot is installed then its not the hardware (or there is little chance) that the modem itself is damaged...


im hoping he tried the compatibility mode and run as admin already
but only mindstorm can confirm

OK, so if I understand you all correctly I should install the modem on a "normal" Windows Vista PC, use drivermax to back up those drivers and then use that backup on my Windows 7 PC.

I can confirm that:
1. The modem works correctly as I use it routinely on both my laptop (in WinXP and OS X) and on other PC's.

2. I've tried to run the installer under both admin mode and compatibility mode in Win 7

3. The modem shows up as a disk in the Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Devices and Printers. though the Huawei installer can't find it even though I run the installer in both compatibility and admin mode

I'd like to take the opportunity to thank you all for your help and commitment, highly appreciated! I hope we'll get this damn thing to work eventually...

yes that confirms my fears...
certainly i was thinking you were smart enough to try the compatibility mode and so i thought you tried that already...
the best thing of drivermax is that you dont have to install it on the same machine...
you can use a different machine since this is a usb and install it from there...
as long as you get the driver....
you can also try drivermax in xp but i would recommend vista

Well, I've given Drivermax a go, but it turns out it doesn't support Vista 64-bit - what a bummer that I have just that version installed on my desktop Next step will be to install my other 2,5 hdd in the laptop, as I have a working XP install on that one. I'll then try and use drivermax to extract those drivers for a reinstallation on my Win7 hdd... the saga continues...

if youre using 9656 which is 32 you could not be able to use it on Vista 64
6956 would not accept the driver....
try it in xp and see how it goes...
at this moment we want to install the driver for the program to see the driver so that loads the client software and finishes the install for u...

ok the reason why it didnt work is because he was backing up a x64(vista x64 driver and trying to import it in a 32 bit system (W7 6956)
that is why i believe that it didnt work...

Of course - you cannot move drivers from 32bit to 64bit and vice versa - silly me, I should have caught that earlier....

No, what I meant (and tried) was to use drivermax on my Vista 64-bit platform. That didn't work as Drivermax is a 32-bit program only. What I'll try and do is to use drivermax on my XP installation ( I will have to swap hdd's for that). I'll post back here with a update...
