In the screenshot, you can see the Windows taskbar rising even though a) it is set to automatically hide and b) there are no orange icons clamouring for my attention. How do I insult it and make it go away?

Welcome

You can set it to hide by right clicking on it and then properties>taksbar>auto hide. It will be hidden until you put the cursor in the spot and then you can see it.

Even a video, bring pop corn

If you already followed the above steps and still have the problem, this may work. But make a system restore first

From what I can find, the only thing that causes it to pop up is the mouse going to that area. The help files do not mention alerts or other situations that may cause it to pop up.

Since I do not see your mouse cursor, is there a possibility you have the mouse cursor set to go to a specific area in certain situations? Is there something on your taskbar that requires a mouse click to verify?

You might unhide the taskbar and watch what happens during normal use.

How do you set the vertical height of the window? Might you be setting it too large for the screen? I like to get the double arrow at the top or bottom of the window then double click. That gives me full height vertically only.

As I always run with a hidden talkbar - Since long before Win7, I have seen this problem and it was often down to a badly behaved application, (often in the system tray).

Ensure that all your apps are patched to the latest version and fully compatible to the OS. I believe that the only way to tie this down is by experimentation - removing items one by one and seeing any changes as they are re-installed. Another help would be to unhide all the system tray items to ensure that any acivity here is fully visible

Also, if possible, switch off any icon animation for system tray items (eg spinning icons when an AV is scanning

I have exactly the same problem , when I receive a msg on google talk the icon will flash just for a couple of seconds, but then my taskbar will end up like yours, or if I download a file with firefox, etc, so I have to click every icon I have opened one by one (what a hassle) and then it will hide again when I GUESS the icon that is claiming my attention:mad: it makes me waste a lot of time.

It should keep blinking indefinitely to get my attention until I click on it.
