Firefox 4.0 UI Redesign In-Content UI Visual Unification

Mozilla is making headway with the major redesign of the graphical user interface it has planned for Firefox 4.0. According to Mozilla designer Stephen Horlander, the next iteration of the open source browser will lose the now-traditional (read obsolete) dialog boxes. The move was designed as a part of the strategy to deliver in-content UI visual unification, Horlander noted. Users can have a look at the images included at the bottom of this screen in order to get an idea of the new GUI details Mozilla is cooking for Firefox 4.0.

However, the designed mockups included below were not intended to be comprehensive or final, Horlander emphasized. In this regard, Mozilla’s plans could definitely change before the browser maker delivers the successor of Firefox 3.6.

“One of the UX team’s priorities for Firefox 4 (and beyond) has been working towards getting more of the secondary UI into the browser as in-content UI. This can be seen already with the work being done on the new Add-ons manager,” Horlander explained.

As users can see via the screenshots offered by Mozilla, the Firefox 4.0 overhaul and in-content UI will reverberate across areas such as session restore, about:config, add-ons manager, network errors and phishing/malware warnings. Instead of popping up a dialog box, Firefox 4.0 will open a new Tab with the content. It appears that the browser maker is also considering integrating preferences, the library, home tab, tabcandy and about:firefox in its in-content UI visual unification strategy.

Oh man, I wil SOOOOOOOOOOOOO download a plugin' to get back the windows for errors and menus. My friend uses Chrome on his PC and whenever I had to use the options, it would open in a tab and it would always screw me up big time.

I actually already have that same skin on my 3.6, although I use Chrome.

So apparently "Tabs on Top = Chrome" to people. It does NOT look like Chrome. How one would think it looks like Chrome is beyond me but those persons must not have to great of eyesight.

It does have some elements that may have been inspired by Chrome, but I can confirm that it does not "look like" Chrome. I personally am stoked about the new UI, I think FF 3.x looks outdated on Windows 7 (no offense to anyone who likes it, to each his own).

Last I heard, there are going to be multiple options for tab placement, so those that don't like tabs on top should still be happy.

i dont like how the tabs are so obvious, it draws my eye too easily
and finally i want my personas!

Tabs on top - So you are saying Opera's browser looks like Chrome to? You will like be able to switch it back down.

No menu bar - You can enable that.

Bookmark toolbar - I'm certain you can allow the bookmark toolbar to be visible.

Icons style - Now your just nitpicking.

yep i dont remember if it was the 3.5 or .6 when personas was standard part of firefox...

as for me i am already using the 3.7 pre alphas and i got to admit the aero is kind of cool...

1: I don't use Opera so No Comment
2: I did not know, but since the tabs are where it should be then it might just look awkward IMO
3: thats good to know
4: It just tries to look pretty wile failing to do so and prob will be less functional (for me)
5: with the new look persona suport will be an unknown for now, but the very least it is safe to assume the ones already out might not work with the new look
