My cheapest option would be a usb sound card I belive but could I use this like a standard sound card and set it up to work with my laptops internal speakers?

There is no way to hook up your laptop speakers to an external sound card, at least without some serious electrical wiring work.

How long has this problem been going on?

If it was your fault, I doubt they will cover it. If the part was defective, there is a good chance they will.

If it's built-in to your motherboard, yes. You would have to replace the entire motherboard (expensive!).

I think your best bet is buying a USB card. If you would like recommendations, just ask.

How much power did you put into the Mic input?

What did you have hooked up to it?
