Windows Explorer Status Bar: does not show file size

I kinda got lost trying to follow this topic. Being that it started prior to the official Win7 release, has the initial issue been resolved? If not, can someone post an image of what it was that they could do/see prior to Win7? I think that the lack of an image in the first post has cascaded into the confusion I am facing.

thnx.

Well maybe something disabled the "Show preview and filters". Go to Computer and click on organize and in the drop down menu click on "Folder and search options". Now check the "Show preview and filters" option and click apply.

Hope this helps :)

This didn't help me, there is no "Show preview and filters" option under "Folder and search options".

I didn't read through all 9 pages, because it was giving me a headache, but if you aren't seeing those options, try going back to the normal Aero theme if possible, instead of using the antiquated Classic theme.

In Aero theme, does the "Folder Options" contain "Show preview and filters" option?
Can aynone please tell it to me?
I don't want to switch to that theme, because all my settings resets when I do so.

Save your current theme, and then role back to it if the option isn't available. Why would you be using the Classic theme and missing out on all the enhancements and usability of Aero, not to mention the fact it offloads some of the UI work to the graphics card, instead of forcing the CPU to do it all?

No it doesn't. It's Visual Effects, not Folder Options. The picture of said page is posted within this topic here:

My "Perfermance Options" dialog box doesn't look same with yours. Actually the only difference is that the "Show preview and filters" option is missing in mine!

Oh my. Thank you for the Classic Explorer reference. I detest when MS removes user control from its applications, and it happens too often. I'm now rid of the horrendous Details bar in WE, and the old useful Status Bar is back. Praise God for small mercies.

This problem drove me NUTS since I switched to Windows 7, but now it's back to "normal" (as it was with XP). I just read through this thread to see if there was any developments on this front, then checked one of my folders, activated the status bar (which for some reason was not turned on), and there it was, the total folder size (excluding sub-folders, of course)!!! I'm not sure if this is a Windows 7 fix or an update for Windows 7 Classic Shell (most likely), which I LOVE. If you prefer the look and feel of XP over Windows 7 and can't believe that they took away the option for classic menus, etc., you MUST check out Win 7 Classic Shell, it's the best!!! I don't know what I would do without it, I might even go back to XP. Anyway, here's a screen shot to prove that using Win7 with Classic Shell the status bar show the folder size automatically (regardless of the number of items) - and it even shows the remaining disk space, which is something XP didn't used to show as far as I recall.

Why did they remove this functionality and why are there no option where you can turn this on. I can't think of any valid arguments :/
Except for this - that they aren't willing to spend resources on adding functionality, no matter how simple/little work involved, that is only useful for a minority group like me.

...and yet they left the little tray area that information is expected to show up in, as if to silently taunt us.

I'm just hoping there's going to be a service pack that will soon save us all from this tedious right-clicking necessity.

are you talking about going:
desktop, right click, 'personalize', scroll to 'Basic and High Contrast Themes', and selecting the "Windows Classic" theme"?

'cause that didn't do anything useful for me...

Classic Shell is a separate application that you have to download. I don't want some third party hack mucking with my shell, even if it is only cosmetic. So I've just been living with it, as everyone else who doesn't opt to install something like Classic Shell.

Indeed, it is, but well worth it.
I don't want some third party hack mucking with my shell, even if it is only cosmetic.
Classic Shell does not "muck up" your shell and the programmer is no hack. You have total control over the changes it brings to your shell.
So I've just been living with it, as everyone else who doesn't opt to install something like Classic Shell.
You (they) don't know what you're (they're) missing! :D

I cant believe after reading this thread how many members with high posts counts act here. Completely missed the OP original questions and mocked him with smart ass replies - That were not what he asked! Nice work!

Be proud you guys, be very proud. Not only acted like a bunch of know it all smug jerks, you weren't even right....

Maybe next time read and understand the question before you jump all over the poster with pointless jabs...

How many of you guys pointed out single file situations when he was asking about multiple file selection? Embarrassing to read. All the useful help came from low posting members. Not the big point "stars"

Ever since i started using Win7 the lack of file size info in Status bar was infuriating. So i finally googled it and came straight here, read all the pages hoping to find a solution,and... i did :) it's called Classic Shell and it's beautiful :) My only complain about it is that the number of items and free partition space is shown all the way left in the Status bar,and the filesize info is shown all the way right. Now,that might not be such a problem for people still on 17-19" monitors, but i've got 26" wide monitor and i must literally move my head to spot the filesize info that would be much better off right next to the number of files info. I've looked through all the possible settings of Classic Shell including that .ini file editing, but didn't find a way to change it... Hope this will be read by someone that can do something about it. Thanks again for Classic Shell.

Me too, has read all the pages in this thread, but neither of solutions worked for me. Using classic theme doesn't help either.

Please guys, can you suggest a working solution for this problem already?

Note that Classic Shell is not the same as Classic Theme. You must download and istall Classic Shell, link's on previous pages. Now, if you don't wanna do that, that's another story... So far there are no other solutions.
