Clicking anywhere on file line selects file

I'm trying to do things like select multiple files (or folders), paste a file, or create a new file/folder but if I click anywhere on the line, it selects the file as if I was clicking on the file name. It means I have to click in a blank area (outside of a column or line) to do any of this stuff and it's very annoying.

Windows XP only selected the file if I clicked on the file name; how do I get this functionality in Windows 7?

You might consider trying select using a check box instead to see if that may work better for you for this.

That's weird. I actually got frustrated the other day at the fact that clicking on the line doesn't highlight the file. I haven't tried this out, but maybe it depends on whether it's in list mode or details mode as to whether clicking on the line selects it or not?

Open a folder and click on Tools - Folder Options



Make sure it says Double Click to Open Item.

Also under view you can select Use Check Boxes to Select Item.

What you are describing I believe is the way Win 7 works and cannot be changed.

It actually worked on my work laptop but I'm not sure what the difference was so I'll have to play with it more.

My beef is that if Windows 7 can do this, there should at least be an option for it.

Selecting by checkbox is much more difficult as I want to drag a highlight box around a select group of files, not just one or the entire list. Considering Windows XP did this, not having that option in Windows 7 would be a downgrade.

The checkbox will let you select multiple files by clicking on each files checkbox.

Using Win7 64bit Home premium I am able to open a folder and AFTER I hold down the Shift key, I can then select as long list of files as I want.

Works for the Ctrl key too.

I use single click.

The neat thing about the check box is you don't have to hold down any keys to select multiple files. Just point and click.
