What don't you like about Windows 7?

Not open for further replies.
You should break that habit. This is not Windows XP and memory is not managed the same way. Windows 7 knows how to manage memory, leave it alone.
I guess you are right, even when using demanding apliccations I'm never run out of memory, and 7 still has the same speed as I have just boot up the PC... With XP I needed the memory tweker that came with Tune Up Utilities XD...

Aero Basic....if your computer can handle Aero you should not be using Aero Basic at all. Aero Basic is CPU only it get zero GPU acceleration while most of Aero is done on the GPU.
Well... I had to use it on my notebook (6 cell battery Acer Aspire 4535) in certain sutuations in which I was using the battery, but, since Aero takes more power (I don't know why...) I switch to basic, I get more time on the battery, so I can do some stuff that requires a bit of time, but the acceleration in some animations in windows gets odd... that's the only reason why I use Basic, in my Desktop I have Aero all the time and I love it XD.

Don't bother doing this. It does absolutely nothing. And never has. Its like telling a car it has four wheels. Changing this setting does not help your boot time. Windows is smart enough to cache everything from the previous boot and that is how you get a shorter boot time.
This is only used for TESTING and has nothing to do with performance. Leave the settings set to default. There are Threads on this here at SevenForums if you wish to read more on it. I don't have the link handy but can be searched.
XD I was fooled then... I guess that the start time decrease is due to SuperFetch doing its job then... I'll search for that info here, I still need more to learn ;)

Bottom line - Windows 7 handles memory very well. This is not XP or even Vista. There is nothing you can do and no third party software that can improve Win 7's memory management. At best, these efforts will do nothing; at worst, they will actually slow your system down. Forget everything you learned about memory and the registry in XP. It does not apply to Win 7.
You're right too, I need to leave that bad habit (sometimes hard taking in mind that I used XP for about 3 years XD)

See ya!! :D

I wish Microsoft would build a documents menu function into the task bar icons. Let's say I have a bunch of shortcuts to (e.g.) my games. I would like a quick single click way of opening up a menu of those shortcuts (rather than going through the start menu, which takes longer). Nope. Can't do. So I use this handy little utility called 7stacks to do it. Which works fine but is buggy on occasion (like inexplicably suddenly deciding not to work). It would be nice to have folders in the task bar able to open up a menu of its contents (including sub-menus for sub-folders or shortcuts to folders).

It would be nice if the user were able to "safely" change the boot screen, the one before the log-on scree. I already changed the log-on screen but I wish I did not have to watch the Windows icon fly onto my screen and join together like a butterfly.

Negatives

I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Mac user, and I've upgraded to Win 7 on my work computer. I have to say, I don't find much wrong with the OS. (I know, all my Mac friends just gasped in amazement!).

We are having problems with print driver compatibility, but that's the printer manufacturers' issue, not MS's. --JB

Restore Points

I'm just getting my feet wet with Win7. Overall I think I'm going to enjoy it once I get familiar with it. About the only real negative I can think of is that you can't delete certain restore points that I know of. It's either delete them all, delete all but the last one or none.

--JB

JB, welcome to the Seven Forums.

May I ask which printer driver is causing problems?

I played around with tool bars at first. I didn't know about the nested folder capability (that's good), but in playing around with it again, I came across the annoyance which caused me to look elsewhere for a taskbar menu launcher. When the taskbar is locked, the moving handles on the toolbar disappear, causing the tool bar title to shift to the left. But the width of the tool bar stays the same, which means a little bit of the first icon in the folder shows on the right hand side. With the moving handles now gone, I can no longer resize the tool bar to get rid of that portion of the first icon. It looks messy. Besides, I would rather a nice icon to act as a menu, not some text with a small menu to the right.

I agree 100%.

This was actually the first dissapointment for me with W7.

The concept was SO SIMPLE and completely missed.

You should be able to pin a folder to the task bar, give it an icon and have it fly out as a built in part of the task bar. (Or better yet some built in mechanism of drag and drop so a folder is not even needed) The additional toolbar hack is clumbsey and ugly.

And yes, 7 Stacks is /close/ just like the crunched up additional toolbar hack is close but IMHO just not right.

And given the fact that being able to add additional DISCONNECTED toolbars was removed, they should have given is something decent as a replacement :(

I really dislike how windows 7 handles driver signature enforcement. I understand not allowing unsigned drivers to normal users, but it should be an option from within windows, not the boot sequence.

I hate the start menu.
