Mouse cursor & functions are lagging behind by a few seconds

Ok this is getting REALLY frustrating!

For some reason my mouse cursor & functions are lagging behind by a few seconds. Even when I type sometimes it takes a few seconds for the words to appear. Hightlighting doesnt work right away and sometimes the cursor takes a few seconds to even appear.

Any ideas what this is at all & how to fix it?

It just started in the last day or so and I cant deal with this any more.

Sounds like it may be memory. Take memtest86 and tell us how it goes.

You may also want to check graphics card and drivers.

Whenever there is an unexpected change, I always recommend a anti virus scan
and to
Download and run a scan with malwarebytes.

Since it is so easy, type cmd, in search. Then right click and run as administrator. Then in cmd type sfc /scannow

If available, try another mouse, too.

it cant be memory, I've got 8g's and its only running at 38% (which still seems like a lot but I've got a few things going) I have the CPU usage widget on my desktop

I just ran microsoft security essentials and it came up fine, I'm also in the process of running spybot.

What else could I try? Its not just the mouse either as the words dont appear when I'm typing either...

Has anthing happened, just before the problem. Updates, installs, uninstalls, trying to improve OS, overclocking?

Ok I'm installing it now.

What is SFC?

Not that I know of, but there may have been a couple of things that were updated within windows, but I think I made the new paragon backup of it already... But I know the mouse issue was working fine at the time of the paragon backup otherwise I wouldnt have made the backup...

I'm certainly not the highest authority here but from my experience with XP and now using Windows 7, (which I was really hope would have fixed this) I typically use my machine for long periods during the day and I especially spend a great deal of time on net.

And I find that after several hours of intensive work and leaving many programs open, I have that exact issue and for me I have found that it is indeed a kind of a memory issue as the way I solve this is to run cCleaner and with that I find many temp memory areas filled that then get flushed via cCleaner.

Once I run cCleaner it fixes up stuff nice.

The only thing that sucks is that I have to close everything that is running to do this correctly.

Just by the by, my old machine was XP 32 bit with 4 gigs memory and the new one is basically a whole new hardware build with 8 gigs of new memory and a 64 bit system so it defiantly is using all of it and it still works out this way. Although I will say it takes much longer for it and I find that the mem level amounts cCleaner is flushing are much much greater so all in all I think I have increased my fill point.

If you haven't tried cCleaner give it a shot, as well a good way to test this may be to try rebooting the machine and see if that has any effect as that will flush some stuff out too.

But if this is your issue, cCleaner is the best thing to use.

Yes I was thinking this was an issue, but I could have sworn the computer has been restarted in the last 24 hours.

But why when we are running this much ram do we see the system start to bog down and not function as smoothly as it should?

Yeah I don't know and it really sucks, especially as sometimes I'll have many many browser windows open and need them all to continue my research but don't really want to bookmark them as that fills that up fast.

As well to I might have a complex word or name or html line in my memory that I'm keeping to paste and I have to then copy that to a doc file so I don't loose that.

Sometimes I can flush the cache on the browser and that helps a bit but not for long, as well I have tried running cCleaner when the browser is open (use Firefox btw) and that won't clean it out or clean any other program that is open so all in all its a pain to have to save or bookmark everything an have nothing running so cCleaner can work right.

Another weird part is too that I can say is that sometimes I have run cCleaner and have found almost 1.5 gigs of cookies and other crap in there and sometimes I have run it an found almost nothing but in either case its still plugged up, but never the less found cCleaner straightens it out.

Again I'm hardly an authority but all I can guess is that when you run a lot of programs and keep them open, especially one such as a browsers which is making a lot of changes that don't get flushed till it closes, that all the stuff that is getting stored for that and just eventually builds up enough that instead of a program essentially taking up say 20 megs its now like a gig. Plus I think the programs themselves typically have a cache limit so once that's filled then it's plugged up.

Btw I did find some relief by increasing my browsers cache limit.

Memory loss is not as bad with the current OS as it was for the older systems, prior to XP. It is just Windows in Action.

The only remedy that I can think of is to close all programs, windows etc not being used.

Are you using Bluetooth keyboard and mouse? That kind of lag can occur when using wireless kb & mouse, especially Bluetooth, when the receiver has some issues or when batteries in kb or mouse are almost empty.

If this is the case, check the batteries and if necessary update Bluetooth drivers.

I am using the microsoft wireless natural media keyboard & wireless intelli mouse, but I have the receiver literally right next to them right now and I've never had this issue before. And the batteries are new-er...

It just almost seems as the computer itself is slower and not working right.

I would go easy with the Ccleaner, good for limited use, in my opinion

Do regular maintenance. Disc Scan, cleanup, delete temporary files, etc.

Yeah again I'm hardly the authority but when I say to use cCleaner, I just use the initial cleaning part on a regular basis and not anything else.

I have used the registry cleaner and from what I hear its one of the safest but even with that, now I really won't do that unless I really think I need it for some reason as I think it has cause some harm in the past.

For me I have pretty much check all the boxes for the system and the apps but I leave the advanced section alone.

For the most part I think that is probably OK but it wouldn't surprise me that over time this may cause issues. But as far as any app out there that I know of that is the best performing per safety one that I know of.

If you are worried about it though my best recommendation might be to go to some kind of the dedicated cCleaner board for which here is theirs: Piriform Community Forums -> CCleaner Discussion and maybe post about your setup and see if you can get any recommendations for a safe clean.

As well just to mention, one thing I have had to do is that if there are any cookies that you want to be sure to keep, IE say something like your Google pref, you might want to do a clean, visit and just setup those sites, then go into the "Options>Cookies" section and see if you can figure out which ones those are and choose to save them. This way you don't have to deal with re-setting up stuff for sites like that after every cleaning.

As well to mention that one thing I have found is that cCleaner is really good at saving that during any of their updates so hopefully once you pick these out, that should really be the last time you will ever have to do this.

Very wise. Everything that I have read about reg cleaners, they are nothing but trouble. I use ccleaner, myself, but dont fool with the reg portion. Just regular maintenance to clean the drive etc.

If you are using a WiFi router, try to change its frequency (channel) and see if it helps. Conflicting frequencies can also produce this kind of behavior.

You may be experiencing high DPC. Try disabling Microsoft Security Essential's Auto-Protection. If that fixes the problem then know that Microsoft is aware of the problem and are working on a fix. Some people have been lucky to be able to disable and then re-enable the auto-protection and the problem stays fixed until the next reboot.
