The problem with most of the original X-box's was that the original cheap TIM "thermal interface material" would dry up and then it would overheat. In most cases this is the only problem. My son has fixed quite a few of them by simply replacing the TIM with something better like artic cooling MX-3. There are online tutorials on how to open the box and how to work on them. It's fairly simple to fix the problem.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that it is, but that the faceplates that have been released so far won't work with it.

From my understanding most of the red ring of death problems can be fixed by re-applying the thermal paste on the cpu. (this is what a local gaming shop that does repairs and mods for gaming consoles told me)

My first gen. xbox still runs like a charm (little noisy though lol)
that wont fix it, but it will help prevent it.

The positive in my thoughts about this console:
-250GB HDD
-slim
-WI-FI!!!!
-quite sound?
-$300
-kinnect ready

The negitives i feel like its gonna suck:
-1 year warrenty only and excluding the 3 year rrod.
-250gb hdd....how the hell ima fill that bad boy up? lol jk
-it looks fatly wide on the side

Now im wondering if this console will easily be modded?

Remember, the original 360 had a 1 year warranty as well. The 3 year RROD warranty came after the fact that so many of them blew up. If this proves to be a problem going forward, I'm sure they would also increase the warranty.

Yeah, I would expect them to extend it as well, if RRODs become an issue. I think that MS has had enough time and experience with the RROD that this new hardware should be at least as good as the Elites, which were pretty stable and solid when it came to not getting the RROD.

They really did a good job adddressing most concerns. BUT...

Where is the bluray?!?!?

Ugh, Bluray is here, here now, players are cheap (As cheap as DVD players when gen 1 was released). It's time to have upgraded. THis was a big misstep and could have really breathed some more life into the console. The door is still WIDE open for people to buy a PS3 instead because they get a "free" bluray player with their new console. And bottom line, it just looks way better on the bullet point slicksheet.

I can see where you're coming from, however I think a lot of people, myself included, don't really watch movies using their XBox, unless it is through Netflix. I agree that it would look nice in the specs, but they are probably waiting for the next gen Xbox to implement it.

Blu-ray games? The PS3 takes forever to load games and even longer to install them! If you want a blu-ray player then go buy one. Its that simple. If blu-ray players are so cheap then what is the problem with buying one seperately?

There are several bluray players and burners by the ussualy manufacturers for PCs..

I totaly agree that it's not necessary thing at all for any real practical reason. But it's a big marketing issue.

I have a bluray deck, my laptop has a BD player, my desktop has a BD burner, my brand new gen 3 xbox has a.... DVD player :P

The PS3 fanatics use that excuse contantly to bash the xbox. If your trying to compete with someone, sometimes you need to take them on face to face.

I don't even know anyone personally (meaning not including online friends) that actually watches blu-ray. Its not as great as its made out to be.

I watch BluRay discs. I have 2 stand alone players in my home and almost exclusively rent bluray titles from Netflix at this point.

My dad has a BR player and my wife's dad also has a BR player. And I lend out my BR movies to quite a number of people at work who have BR players. They aren't mainstream here yet...but I know lots personally who have them.

And I also don't use my game consoles to watch movies. I have stand alone players for that.

I bought a BD player about a year ago replacing my very nice up-conversion DVD player. The BD player works great and I really like it, however I have notice over the last year that my video viewing has changed. Instead of watching DVDs or BDs I am watching .AVI or .MKV files. I pay for a subscription that lets me download the movie and watch it, very cool. My BD Player now has dust on it. 5 years ago if you would have asked me if I would be giving up my DVD player (humm BD player now-a-days) I would have said never!
